Shake Up In The Atf, Operation Fast And Furious Under Scrutiny In Two Countries

Thanks to Operation Fast and Furious, there are some major changes in the federal firearms agency, The bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has reassigned its director and the US Attorney that provided legal guidance to the operation has resigned.

Kenneth Melson had become the director of the ATF in 2009 and will now become a senior adviser on forensic issues. He will be replaced by B. Todd Jones, a US attorney who will be acting ATF director on a temporary basis. In addition to the reassignment of Melson, the Department of Justice announced that Arizona US Attorney, Dennis Burke has resigned his post, effective immediately. Burke’s office had originally provided some legal guidance to Operation Fast and Furious’s weapon sales program.

Operation Fast and Furious is being called yet another error in the Obama Administration. That operation involved allowing dangerous, assault weapons of various types to be bought by the thousands. People would buy the weapons and then transfer them to others who would be prohibited from buying them. Critics have long pointed out that these buyers are transferring the weapons to criminals who end up selling them to the drug cartels in Mexico. The operation has long been under scrutiny which came to a head in December of last year when a border patrol agent was shot and killed while on duty in Arizona. Two weapons were recovered at the scene of that crime, both believed to have come from Operation Fast and Furious.

The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Lamar Smith is calling Melson nothing more than a scapegoat and points out that there are far bigger problems within the Department of Justice as well as in the ATF. Even those within the agency are calling Operation Fast and Furious a “colossal failure of leadership.”

Weapons that were bought by people and then transferred were known to be headed for Mexico, more weapons for the bloody drug wars that are being fought on the public streets, especially in the border towns as the cartels jostle for their control of prime territories but instead of stopping the weapons once they were sold, the ATF agents were told to let the weapons “walk” in hopes of bringing down the entire smuggling operation from top to bottom.

Mexico’s Attorney General is demanding the United States launch a fast and comprehensive investigation, holding everyone who is responsible for these weapons to be held accountable. The country has been pointing at the US for fueling the drug wars, supplying weapons and demanding more and more drugs from the cartels.

Two drug cartels are currently embroiled in vicious battles with one another. The Los Zetas and the Gulf Cartel have been engaging in public gun battles that have killed thousands in Mexico in the recent years. Five of the Los Zetas drug gang are currently being held in connection with a deadly blaze in a Monterrey casino.
