The Global Commission’s Report on the War On Drugs: Epic Fail

The 19th member of the international commission on the war on drugs has released its report on worldwide drug policy and the international war on drugs. That report, which looked at the measures that have been taken to battle drug trafficking and to punish drug lords as well as the incredibly high costs of fighting this war has declared the entire thought process an epic failure. Citing the explosion of drug related crimes in Mexico and in other countries around the world, the Commission did offer several recommendations to be considered.

It has been five decades since the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, and forty years since President Nixon declared the US Government War on Drugs. Since then, there have been a number of attempts at eradicating drugs but none of them have been effective. Once one type of drug is seemingly cleaned up from an area, a new one takes its place. If you round up all of the drug dealers from one neighborhood, three rivals move in and set up shop.

In response to the Commission’s report, the White House office for Drug Policy released its own statement which included a number of statistics that it said proved that things are not as grim as the Commission is implying. The White House said in part that the use of cocaine has decreased, especially in the workplace, with nearly seventy percent less people testing possible for that drug since 2006. In addition, overall drug use in the US has decreased in the last thirty years. Colombia, long considered the leading producer of cocaine has also seen a major decrease in its production capability which may also explain some of the decrease in use.

The Global Commission, which is a private venture, has recommended that decriminalizing certain drugs might help to take some of the power out of the gangs and organized crime syndicate hands. It also suggested that some of the stigma of taking drugs be removed. Other suggestions made by the report included replacing overall drug policy with cost effective and financially responsible concepts rather than those that cater to outdated ideologies and political rhetoric. The Commission also called for a challenge to long held and very common misconceptions about drugs, their markets as well as users and dependence.

The War on Drugs has been increasingly bloody and violent in Mexico where bitterly divided gang rivals have taken to the street to shoot out their claims for territory. During one of these battles, shots rang out just outside the window of a classroom where small children were forced to lay on the floor. To keep them calm during the chaos, the 33 year old teacher had them sing a song and calmly told them that nothing was wrong. Five men died in that intense gun battle. Estimates put the number of drug related deaths in Mexico as high as 30,000.
