The opening week of the Casey Anthony murder trial was rocked by a bombshell declaration by the defense. Jose Baez, lead defense lawyer for the young woman accused of murdering and then hiding her young daughter claimed that there was no murder, that little Caylee drowned in the family swimming pool. The prosecution quickly dismissed the tale as nothing more than a desperate attempt at defense and then quickly set about building their case.
Week three of the case has been the hardest for the jurors and at times, it would seem, the hardest on Casey Anthony who to this point has been rather stoic no matter what is being said. This past Monday, a computer expert discussed the searches that had been performed on the computer in the Anthony home which included over eighty separate searches for chloroform and related search terms. Those searches also included “neck breaking”.
But, the hardest part of the trial were the actual testimony, often times brutal and graphic related to the remains of the little girl’s body that had been recovered a mile away from the home she had lived in. During testimony, the jurors heard about the bones that were found, including their location and their descriptions. Other testimony spoke about decompisition and odor as well as bugs that are associated with decaying bodies. Animals had apparently been feeding on the little girl’s bones, a fact that made Casey Anthony look pale and sick for the first time since the trial started. During presentation of pictures of the little skull, still bearing swathes of duct tape, Anthony looked as if she might vomit. The Judge in the case adjourned court early that day, telling the media that neither the defense nor prosecution were going to give a statement nor answer any questions.
Dr. Jan Garavaglia gave what might be the most damning testimony on Friday, saying that while she could not give a definitive answer as to how Caylee died, she could say that the only “logical” conclusion was that it was murder. Baez tried to refute part of her testimony, but the veteran medical examiner would not be swayed. She pointed out that she has never seen duct tape on an accident victim.
Testimony from the two deputies who worked with the cadaver dogs also revealed that both dogs had alerted on Casey Anthony’s white, Pontiac Sunfire. One of the dogs also alerted to possible human remains near the plastic playhouse that belonged to Caylee.
Speculation about the trial is suggesting that this will be the last week of the prosecution’s case with the defense possibly mounting their case as soon as the end of the coming week. Whether Baez will stick to his bombshell story that Casey and George hid Caylee after finding her accidentally drowned in the pool will remain to be seen. He will need to counteract the multitude of lies that have already been unraveled in Casey’s stories.
