The Royal Wedding - The Other Side

The royal wedding is due on Friday, April 29th, which is just around the corner. Most of the news sites are concerned with what Prince William thinks about the wedding, or what Catherine Middleton is going to wear. The ceremony itself is going to be broadcasted all over the world, including live on the Internet. About 2 billion people will be able to watch the royal wedding, if they choose to do so. And while everybody is so excited and many celebrations are planned, the state of the common people is hardly discussed at all. So what does an ordinary person feel about all of this?

Naturally, people are happy for Prince William, and want to celebrate. However, if we put aside the upper middle-class, the working man (or woman) on the street is not in a happy place, and the wedding has nothing to do with that. With high unemployment rates, a huge national debt, and simply an economy crisis, the man on the street knows that the wedding by itself is probably not going to help him much. Go a bit further than London and you'll find numerous people who are looking for a decent job for months, but can't find anything.

While the royal wedding indeed aids the economy somewhat by creating new jobs (albeit temporary ones) and helping tourism, scheduling the wedding for Friday, which is a working day, is problematic. All the people have a free day they didn't ask for. Better yet, some of them really don't want that free day - they prefer to work and get paid. All in all, the choice of the day costs the British tax-payer billions of dollars.

Some entrepreneurs have already seized the moment and started marketing all kinds of wedding-related products: coffee mugs, T-shirts and what not. Unfortunately, not all people are that resourceful, and the number of people who can actually take advantage of the royal wedding and earn extra cash, is limited. The unemployed probably stay unemployed.

When the royal wedding is finally over, everybody is going to see the exact same things that they'd seen just a couple of weeks before. All those people without a job are still going to remain unemployed. There won't be any magical solution that will help them get a job quickly. The only thing these people can try to do is to think outside of the box, and maybe find a job in places they didn't think of.
