Turkey is Stuck In the Middle, Syria Cracks Down on Rebellion

Turkey is between a rock and a hard place, stuck between wanting to help its long time ally, Syria, but still wanting to provide humanitarian aid to the refugees that are fleeing the country in droves. Some 2400 Syrians have crossed the border into Turkey, most of them from the embattled city of Jisr al-Shughur.

The Syrian government moved in troops to crack down on rebels in that city and others in response to the death of 120 cops and security officials, perpetrated according to official statements, by armed gangs. An anonymous source reported that there were at least 60 vehicles, including ten trucks filled with soldiers and tanks heading for that city.

While Turkey’s official stance has been to leave the borders open for any refugee who is seeking safety there, the country is trying to avoid making the situation in Syria look any worse than it currently is. The police in these border cities have been ordered to prevent the refugees from speaking to the media, in hopes of keeping what is really going on from becoming common knowledge to the international community. The Turkish regional governor was seen by media members who were being kept at a distance from the fences near the refugee camp, but did not give any statement or make comments at all.

Syria is already the subject of an extensive report chronicling the crimes against humanity the government has perpetrated. That report, completed by Human Rights Watch, was the compilation of interviews with dozens of witnesses as well as a number of videos about the abuses that protesters have been exposed to by the government since anti-government protests started in the country in the middle of March.

At the time of that report, there had been nearly nine hundred deaths with many others missing. the Syrian Security forces were obviously targeting civilians according to many of the eyewitness accounts contained in that 57 page document. It concluded by calling for the UN Security Council to impose serious sanctions against Syria and to take actions against the government for the crimes against humanity.

The protests have been ongoing in Syria and other countries in the region, with the violence steadily escalating. In light of the modern times, Facebook has played an integral role in organizing the protests, especially among the country’s youth, as well as keeping people updated about what is really going on. Some of the deaths that have happened have only been reported on the Syrian Facebook page.

The Syrian government came under fire after a group of young boys were held and tortured for allegedly defacing government buildings in the city of Daraa. Those boys were eventually released, however, it was only after serious abuses and torture including an accounting of the rape of one protester with a baton. Others reported being urinated on, shocked with electricity and threatened with immediate execution. Rumors remain that there might be a mass grave in the country.
