US President to Syrian President: Your Time In Office Must End Now

President Barack Obama has issued a written statement to Syrian President Bashar Assad telling him that he he needs to leave office and to immediately stop the repeated acts of brutality against protesters in that country. That statement also gave praise to the protesters who have been working for several months to end the oppressive regime. The timing of the protests coincides with the bloody crackdown issued by the government.

In addition to the statement by the White House, there has been continued pressure by the international community as well. The United Nations has confirmed that all non-essential staff have been pulled from Syria. Sanctions, including a ban on the importation of Syrian oil to the United States have also been announced. The US has frozen all Syrian assets held under its jurisdiction and has also announced that no US citizen will be allowed to have any dealings with any member of the Syrian government.

The United Nations has released a report documenting the ongoing brutality aimed at the protesters. The European Union will use that recently released report to leverage and influence Russia, one of the remaining countries resistant to any increased UN sanctions.

Human Rights groups have been decrying the actions of the Syrian government for many months now. President Assad has repeatedly claimed that any claim of violence is the work of armed gangs that are merely posing as protesters and that claims of civilian deaths are being greatly exaggerated. Syria has not allowed any journalist in the country to document the struggles.

In early August, eight premature infants died after the authorities cut the power in a local hospital in Hama. That action was directly related to the government cutdown and was another of the events that was disavowed on Syrian television. But, US Ambassador Robert Ford who has seen a number of the events first hand, warns the outside world not to believe anything reported on state run television which is directly controlled by the government.

In addition to statements and sanctions from the US, the UN and other nations, Syria has been given a written statement from Kuwait and the Cooperation Council for Arab States of the Gulf which has asked for an end to the bloodshed and violence as well as an attempt at real, serious reforms to meet the needs of the Syrian people. The Syrian response to the statement was a complete rejection, saying that the Council did not have all of the facts and that they as well as the Western world were ignoring the facts that killings and other actions were being carried out by “armed terrorist groups, posing as protesters.”

Russia continues to be reluctant to crackdown on Syria’s government and has announced that it will continue selling arms to the country. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged the Russian government to put a halt to the sales and deliveries this year to no avail.
