Was Breivik A Lone Wolf Or Were There Really Other Cells?

Anders Behring Breivik, the man behind the Oslo bombing and the mass shooting spree at Utoya Island, just twenty miles away has been described by Norwegian experts in a number of terms, but the word “leader” has not come up. Although he has claimed a number of times that he is only one of many in his cells, there has been no concrete evidence linking him to anyone else nor to suggest the existence of any of these cells.

In court, Breivik admitted that he created and then detonated the bomb outside of the government buildings in the capital city of Oslo. He also admitted that he went to the youth camp twenty miles away and shot random victims, methodically and calmly. But, what he did not do was admit to anything criminal. In his own words and in his own mind, the acts were “atrocious” but absolutely necessary.

Experts, including Magnus Ranstop, the Research Director at the Center for Asymmetric Threat Studies at the Swedish National Defense College have stopped just short of confirming that Breivik was a lone wolf, a man who acted alone on his grandiose plans and narcissistic personality. Ranstop, explained to the media that most mass killers perform their crimes alone and that they have a higher sense of self. Breivik, for example, has talked incessantly about his role in history.

Breivik had published a 1500 page manifesto in which he revealed his main goal, listing “to save Europe from Muslims.” In that rambling document, he offered suggestions for confusing the police and other authorities so that they think that you have more people in your cell than you really have. He also drifted back and forth between talk of medieval crusades and Internet war games.

In addition to his misinformation to the masses tips in the manifesto, Breivik refers to himself as Justiciar Knight Commander of Cell 8 and mentions initiating contact with at least two other cells. He had asked to explain his motives in court but was denied that request by the judge who closed the hearings to the public. Breivik had also asked to wear a uniform to court but was denied that request at all. According to records, he had no military history nor had he performed any other uniformed job. He was dressed in a policeman’s uniform when he came to the youth camp on the day of the shooting.

According to personal documents, Breivik had been planning his actions for some time, even wanting to appear “fresh” the day of the attack. He had also planned to share expensive French wine with two prositutes.

Over 100,000 people gathered in Oslo and thousands of others all over Norway gathered to show their grief and their solidarity with one another.. A minute of silence near a church in the city turned into five minutes of total silence. Candles were lit and the people hugged one another. And now, the small nation will work toward getting back to some sense of normality.
