U. S Congressman, Anthony Weiner had, up until this week, had remained defiant in the face of all of his critics, refusing to give up his congressional seat. Three weeks ago, texts and one lewd photo sent to a woman in Texas surfaced, exposed to the public view by conservative blogger, Andrew Breitbart. Following standard political protocol, Weiner flatly denied that the photo which did not show his face, was him. Had things ended there, his career would still be on track.
Seemingly every day, a new piece of information would surface, further implicating the 46 year old in a scandal that had people demanding his immediate resignation and still he would not go. Finally, amid new reports that there were communications with other women beyond just the single mother in Texas, Weiner finally gave in and announced that he was giving up his Congressional seat. If there are any supporters worrying about his ability to provide for himself and his family, including his pregnant wife, rest easy: Weiner will be well provided for.
According to estimates by the National Taxpayers Association, Weiner could end up with making over one million dollars from congressional pension payments alone. Add to that the money he might have in his Thrift Savings Plan, which to Congress is roughly the same as a 401 (k), which by all estimates could be just over $200,000, if he has been investing heavily into that account.
Weiner also has over $300,000 of unused campaign funds in his account. While he cannot use this money for his own personal use, he can do a number of things with it. He can choose to give it to charity, donate it to the Democratic party or a campaign or he could save the money in that account to be used for a campaign if he ever chooses to run again. Experts say that this might be the most unlikely scenario.
Even before he had officially announced his resignation, Anthony Weiner had two job offers, including one from Larry Flynt, publisher of Hustler magazine. That offer included a sizeable raise plus the family’s moving expenses. The second job offer came for a cameo role on the show, Entourage, on HBO. Weiner did not comment on either of these job offers.
When the story first broke, Weiner tried to claim that his Twitter account had been hacked and that he was the subject of a cruel prank. But, according to his critics, many of whom were Republicans, tired of the way that Weiner behaved, there were red flags about that very account before the naughty picture ever surfaced. One group who had been monitoring the Congressman, noted that the women who were following him were getting younger and younger, including the 26 year old single mother he was flirting and sexting with. Weiner’s wife, a senior aid to Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has stood behind him through the scandal.
