Would You Rent A Billboard To Get Your Daughter Elected Prom Queen?

If you were a parent, and your daughter had been nominated for prom queen, would you consider renting a billboard to get her elected? It is a unique idea, and most people would not go this route to be elected prom queen.

In school, a young woman makes friends and gets involved in activities. People get to know her by talking with her and seeing the activities she chooses to become involved with. If she joins the cheerleading squad, she would likely be athletic and extroverted, while joining the newspaper staff would indicate that she is interested in writing and is likely to be somewhat introverted. She becomes popular and makes more friends as she continues through school.

Then, when senior year arrives, excitement builds. There are memory books to sign, scholarships to apply for, classes and exams to pass, and colleges to apply to and visit. In the whirlwind of activities in preparation for graduation, a young woman wants to make memories. She and her friends take road trips to major cities for shopping and sightseeing. During their time together, they talk, laugh, and have fun. They will remember days like this for many years.

The young woman will also remember her senior prom, especially if she has been nominated for prom queen. How can she get people to vote for her, though? There are a number of ways to do this in the school setting, such as word of mouth, an advertisement in the school newspaper, and flyers on bulletin boards. When the bell rings, and students leave school for the day, she wants the students to remember that she is running for prom queen. How can she accomplish this?

She might consider advertising it on a billboard, the way politicians do when they are running for election. By putting an ad that says something like "Jane Doe for Prom Queen, John Doe High School", students of the school would be reminded that the young woman is running for prom queen. They would see the ad every time they went to work, to school, to the grocery store, or anywhere else. The message would be in their subconscious mind, and they would know who to vote for.

The bad thing about this, of course, is that renting a billboard is expensive. Most people do not have the money to do something like this. Also, the only people who are voting for her are students at the school. She is likely unknown to others in the area, unless she has a job, belongs to a church, or finds other ways to see, be seen, and be involved. Others who live in the area will notice the billboard when they are on their way somewhere. They will likely not care, however, because they are concerned with bigger issues, like their survival. They want to arrive at work safely, for example. They want to have enough money in their paycheck to cover their expenses. They want to keep their job. Finally, they want to make it home after their workday.

Regardless of whether or not the young woman is ultimately named prom queen, the night will be special, and she will remember it for the rest of her life.

I would not want to embarrass her. :) She would have to win it on her own, that would be the only way it would mean anything to her. :)

Good point. A billboard would be embarrassing. If she was actually elected prom queen, on the other hand, that would be cool. Thanks for reading.

No, I wouldn't spend the money for a billboard. First of all, the target market for votes is in the school not out on the road, yes some voters will see but many eyes will see a billboard that have no connection to the school. What eyes are seeing this. Are they nice eyes? I think a more targeted approach is necessary, the students of this world are all keyed in to electronic media. So a targeted campaign online or on the students phones is a more proactive choice. Less expensive too.

No I would not, the very purpose of selling yourself like politicians, is not my system. A person that sells themselves and is outstanding and memorable throughout her school career is the one who I would vote for not the rich that sell themselves without achievement. I would have thought that one wants to be remembered for good reasons not because their parents have money.

Good point. I was actually named prom queen when I was a high school senior, and that was because I had a lot of friends. My parents never would have rented a billboard to get me elected. Thanks for reading!
