Self-hypnosis And The Dangers

Before we address the title of this article, some time ago I wrote a piece about the total safety of Hypnosis. This is quite correct, until an idiot decides he/she wants to have a go at hypnosis. They've read all about it, they think, and this one particular genius decides he's going to hypnotize this lady. He does so without any trouble, the period that she's in trance is fine, except at the end. He tells her that;

"I'm going to count backwards from 3, and just before you come out of trance, 10,000 volts of electricity is going to shoot through your body." Then he wondered why she died!

Another case involved a 'hypnotist' who placed a young man into trance. The problem here was that the subject suffered from severe Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression. The short explanation of this condition is that it can manifest into manic episodes, in which the sufferer has far too much energy and undertakes tasks or pastimes which can be very dangerous to themselves and sometimes other people.

After a few days of this, they can then be plunged into deep depression, hence the Bipolar aspect.

This individual knew perfectly well that this poor young man was suffering this most unpleasant condition, but nevertheless went ahead with the session. The result was that the young man was driven completely insane. The press and news media picked up both these cases and had an absolute field day with them, making the most outlandish claims about hypnosis; that it's dangerous, life-threatening, you undergo a session at your own risk, etc.

This is absolute rubbish, of course. Hypnosis 101 makes it crystal clear that no-one with any form of mental disorder should be placed in a trance state. And as for the poor lady who was told she was going to have 10,000 volts of electricity passed through her, the person who hypnotized her should be charged with murder.

I've written about this before, but it bears repeating. Hypnosis is perfectly safe provided it's carried out by a responsible, professional hypnotist, or if you yourself decide to engage in self hypnotism, do so knowing that you're fit and well, especially mentally.

My own feeling is that if you do intend to engage in a session with a hypnotherapist, then obtain a note from your doctor, saying that you're perfectly healthy or not, as the case may be. I believe there are hypnotherapists who insist you obtain such a note before they'll even consider a session.

Really, the dangers of self hypnosis are no different than if you're hypnotizing someone else. One would assume you wouldn't hypnotize yourself if you suffer a mental condition.

But self-hypnosis is remarkably easy. We'll go into the subject in more depth later, but suffice to say for now that you can gaze at a spot on your computer screen and provided you aren't interrupted, you'll find yourself in trance in no time.

I do hope you enjoyed this article and perhaps learned something from it.
