What Does Imagination Have To Do With Hypnosis?

A very interesting question, that. What does imagination have to do with hypnosis? I remember watching this chap on television, years ago. Apparently, through his ability with yoga, he was able to slow his heart rate down to two beats a minute. Takes a bit of believing, doesn't it, but I've read that great sportsmen and women, and people who've suffered through terrible catastrophes, all have had the ability of gaining mastery over their physical states through their mental strength.

Our imaginations are a most powerful and complex phenomena. Use of your imagination gains you entry into a form of hypnotic trance. When you think about it, all your endeavours, all the ideas and plans you have, all start with your imagination. An idea pops into your head for, say, some mechanical gadget. The more you think about it, the more excited and focused you become over thoughts of your new-found idea, the deeper will be the trance in which you find yourself.

Your dreams at night, too, are extremely hypnotic. You're totally taken up with the contents of your dream. Not only that, but the stirrings of every molecule in your body is influenced by your imagination. Whatever you imagine will have an instant effect on your body.

Suppose for a moment that you imagine standing up in front of two thousand people to give a speech. Now, even if this is pure imagination, you're not going to be doing it, but you sit and imagine what it would be like. The chances are your stomach will churn and nervousness will take you over for a few moments. Mind you, you may be someone for whom public speaking on that scale is meat and drink, so in that case it wouldn't apply.

But now, imagine eating a lemon. You admire its size and shape, its colour. You take a sharp knife from the drawer and you cut into it. The juice springs from the fruit, and covers your hand. You lift your hand to your mouth, and imagine all that pure, sour liquid filling your mouth! If you really allow your imagination loose on this, you won't be able to stop yourself puckering up! But it's only imagination, isn't it, and yet look at the effect it had on you. I'll bet you're salivating quite freely now!

We've touched on how the great athletes and sportsmen and women use their imaginations to psyche themselves up before a contest, track meeting or football game. The footballer focuses his mind to where he's running down the field, dodging the opposition and scoring a touchdown. Time after time he does this.

The sprinter imagines that he or she has taken their place at the starting blocks, ready to compete for the 100 metres. But they have a forfeit that none of the others has. This one person must run the race dragging a 100 lbs weight behind them. Yet they imagine winning against all the odds. Or they take the opposite idea and imagine being pulled forward by huge magnets.

So imagination, used correctly, can assure that your endeavours have a very good chance of success. Yet others who suffer chronic pain use their imagination to lessen and control it. They imagine the pain as a colour and see it becoming paler and paler, so causing them less and less discomfort.

I do hope you've learned something about the value of hypnosis and imagination in this article. Please do leave a note if you feel I can help you further.
