Whose Company Do You Keep?

It's been found that if certain words are flashed subliminally before our eyes, we'll follow that suggestion. For instance, if someone flashed the words 'old age' subliminally before you, your actions would end up being like a person in old age, or at least far more in that direction.

On the other hand, let's flash the word 'confidence' up on the screen. At the end of the very short session, you'd stand up and walk from the room, looking thoroughly confident.

Research has been carried out on IQs too. Take the photo of a group of college professors, and people's intelligence definitely tends to rise. However, the same isn't the case if you show them a photo of one single person, a genius like Einstein. We're more likely to be influenced by a group of intelligent people, than by one brilliant individual.

The reason is thought to be that our unconscious minds are far less put off by a group. A sort of; "Well, they all became professors. Perhaps I can too." But when you're shown the photo of a single person who's absolutely outstanding in what he or she does, the old brain thinks to itself;

"Good grief, I'll never be like her."

But this is being unfair to yourself. There's no earthly reason why you shouldn't be able to emulate this lady, provided the subject really interests you and you're prepared to work and study hard. Now, we have to be sensible in all this.

There is no way at all that I'm going to be able to run the 100 metres in 9 seconds, or however fast they are able to run it these days. I'm 73, I broke my hip last year and I'm on oxygen. It takes me a good 9 seconds to sprint across the drawing room! But there's equally no reason why I shouldn't find some subject that really takes my fancy, study hard and work, and find myself up with the big boys and girls.

When I was 16, I was a bound apprentice. I finished the course in five years, but still wouldn't be a masterman myself for at least another ten. Very strong bonds, no pun intended!, were forged between the two. I even knew of one case where the master lost his job over the way his apprentice had been treated. The master wouldn't back down, and they fired him.

What happens really, is that the masterman effectively erects a scaffolding on which you, the apprentice, build. You watch his approach to a job, how he operates, probably note that he never hurries and yet completes the job in half the time of anyone else.

Here, you can put your imagination to good use. Sit or lay down comfortably, close your eyes, and imagine watching, say, a brilliant concert pianist on stage. He starts to play, you listen to the notes of liquid silver flowing from the instrument, and then you slowly take his place. This is another form of hypnosis.

By now, you should be so wrapped up in the piece being played, that for a little while at least, you really are that brilliant pianist. When I was much younger, much younger!, I used to play the tenor saxophone. There was a local band in those days who were really very good, and their sax player was excellent.

I'd go to a lot of their engagements, and simply sit, listen and watch him. It honestly helped my playing. Yes, I still sounded like a fog horn, but a more refined fog horn!

All joking aside, this business of 'floating' into the person you wish to emulate really works. When you first settle yourself comfortably, your thoughts are going to be all over the place. Allow them to settle down,then assuming you wish to be a concert pianist, focus. There's the piano on the stage, one spotlight upon it. Focus on that. Very soon, you'll have self-hypnotized yourself and that's when this whole exercise really becomes a benefit.

I do hope this article has been of some help.

Mike, you've inspired me to try this self-hypnosis you described with the piano. It sounds amazingly tranquil, even if I don't become "one" with the piano!

I'm really flattered and humbled by the kindness you ladies have shown me. Thank you both so very much. Joan, obviously you're at the top of the tree at your profession, but I can still understand how looking at those wonderful painters inspires you. Heather, I was totally fascinated by your experience with the piano. Yes indeed, hypnosis really does work. I write stories as well and even my rather pedestrian writing has been helped by hypnosis. Once again, thank you both very much for your wonderful comments. I appreciate them so much. Every good wish, Mike

This is a wonderful article Mike. The ability to hypnotize oneself is an imaginative process. I use it in my work as a graphic artist all the time, and it definitely helps me to grow. Whenever I need that extra bit of inspiration, I go to the museum in New York and sit in front of my favorite painters, merge with them, and leave with a little bit of them in me. I leave inspired. When you can identify yourself with excellent performance, your own performance can only improve. I absolutely love this article.

Mike I love your approach to hypnosis and the articles it inspires you to write. We used a very similar technique in NLP and called it modelling excellence. During my trainings I was learning the piano and took the time to practice at a local university studio. One day after studying hypnotherapy I went to the studio and sat down to practice. The piece I was learning flowed out of me without even needing the music. It was an amazing experience that attested to me the power of 'trance' although I admit I have never harnessed this experience again in the same way. Just goes to show the unconscious mind knows how to do many things if we give it the right conditions to succeed in them. Who knows... you may be able to make that room crossing in half the time! Would love to visit you and enjoy your active mind. I enjoy these little 'visits' here immensely.
