Would You Like To Be More Charismatic?

Politicians have it. Televangelists certainly have it. But so do a lot of ordinary people. Mark you, the televangelist is usually preaching to the converted, but even so, they can hold audiences in the palms of their hands.

Basically, charisma is the art, or knack, of making people feel better about themselves. Hitler, of course, was a charismatic genius. So was the late John F Kennedy.

Some years ago, there was a test conducted by the psychologist Howard Friedman to test charisma levels. It was also known as 'sending emotions'. He asked a number of people to come into a room, but they had no idea what for. Then they're paired off in different rooms, and told to write down in detail their emotions.

The one rule was that you were not allowed to speak to each other. You were left in there with your partner for two minutes, during which time you both watched each other. At the end of the two minutes, you were asked to write down your moods again.

From this, the psychologist conducted a test to see how high or low were your charisma levels. Some of these questions were; Do you feel confident when you flirt? Do you find it difficult not to tap your toes to music, and various other questions. He then conducted the experiment already described.

Those who'd scored very high were chosen, as well as those who'd scored the lowest. They all had to fill out a form, saying how they felt at that very moment. All the high scorers were put in separate rooms and each was paired with a low scorer. Both in each room were asked to fill out another form as to how they were feeling.

He found that the charismatic people were emotionally contagious, because the low scorers all ended up feeling the same as the high scorers, but the high scorers never picked up the moods of the low scorers.

Would you like to be more charismatic? High charismatics are considered attractive, even if not physically good looking. Popular. They can influence others. They make a good impression on a first meeting and are remembered. Others feel happier of sadder just because they happen to be close to them.

Charismatics express more through their eyes, movements and expressions. Change the expression of your voice. Smile more. If something's happened to you, tell a story. For instance;

"I had a fender bender the other day." All right, but that's a simple fact. Quite frankly, though, it's really rather boring. But if you say;

"I had a fender bender the other day. Suddenly, I heard this squeal of brakes behind me and the next moment -- bang! I thought I'd been hit by a Mack truck, but when I got out of my car, it was this little old lady, covered in confusion, saying she tramped on the accelerator instead of the brake."

Now, that's hardly riveting, but it's a darned sight better than the first effort. Try to develop the habit of using slightly off-beat words. 'Covered in confusion' isn't exactly Shakespearean, but it's better than saying 'confused'.

Try smiling a bit more, or at least put some expression on your face. I know a chap who speaks in a monotone voice all the time. So when you're listening to him, all you're thinking is 'please stop'. He's stultifyingly boring, poor bloke.

You can't do any better than to watch a charismatic person actually speaking. If you're at a party, look for the man or woman who seems to have the most people around them, and wander over. The chances are they're very charismatic. Watch them. You could learn a lot.

I do hope you enjoyed this article.

Dear Joan and Penny. Hitler, yes, ugh! But look at the millions he held in the palm of his hand. Teachers, too, absolutely. At prep school in England there was a gentleman who taught me Latin so well that I came out fourth in the whole country. How he hammered it into my thick head, I'll never know, but how right you are. Every good wish, Mike

Very interesting Mike. It's also true of teachers. Have you ever had a teacher who brings everything to life? And another kind of monotone teacher who puts you to sleep? People with charisma seem to have a life spark that ignites "life" in everyone around them. When it comes to Hitler, I don't know what to say. Ugh.
