All of us are well aware of the environmental crisis that the earth is been facing for quite a while now. Because of our own actions, we have caused the Earth, immense environmental damage and it is now under threat. As a result, natural disasters have increased in their frequency and intensity and it is becoming increasingly difficult to deal with the loss they bring every time, even for all our technological advancement. This article discusses the natural course of action after a natural disaster which is to first provide immediate relief aid and then to provide rehabilitation services.

The incidence of disasters has increased dramatically around the world as a consequence of human interaction with the natural environment for the past century. We have raided the earth of its natural resources, disrespected the atmosphere by releasing pollutants in it and generally established our supremacy as primary beings by completely disregarding the needs of other beings on this planet. This has led to massive climate shift globally which has resulted in a massive shift in the environment of the earth and that is consequently causing the incidence of natural disasters to rise exponentially. The rise in natural disasters means there are more and more people who are being displaced every year and their rehabilitation is the question that needs to be answered.

What happens in an emergency situation like a natural disaster? First of all, humanitarian organizations such as UNHCR send out their resources and supplies in order to provide immediate medical and physical attention to the victims. The UNHCR has a set list of relief items that they have published that include tent kits, blankets, tarpaulin, etc. items that are necessary for immediate survival. The good thing about this list is that it serves as a blueprint for other humanitarian organizations to set their relief items up to a certain international standard, ensuring that it doesn’t deviate in the slightest. This consequently means that disaster victims receive top quality aid items. Many governments are not stable enough to handle the consequences of a natural disaster on their own and have to take monetary help from other nations.

After immediate relief has been provided and the situation is out of immediate danger, the next step for humanitarian organizations is to rehabilitate the people who have been displaced in a way that they can bring their professional and personal lives together to a safer ground which also keeps them motivated. Although one cannot precedence over the other, core relief items are relatively easier to provide in the sense that they are a set number of items that victims need. Whereas rehabilitation is a slow, long and tedious journey back to functionality and normalcy but it really cannot be overlooked. There are many trauma psychologists who work tirelessly to provide this kind of therapy to displaced individuals.

The psychological aftermath of a natural disaster is much more difficult to deal with and cannot be cured with core relief items. Hence, this makes it much more permanent and daunting in nature. Most people suffer from PTSD after being in natural disaster or a displacement which is highlighted by vivid flashbacks, avoidance of stimuli, feelings of dissociation, extreme fear, etc. Treating such individuals psychologically is a great task and can only be undertaken by trauma psychologists who are especially trained for such massive emergency situations. The road to recovery not only includes resolving feelings of fear and anxiety about the incident but also to be motivated enough to try living again and rebuilding all the things that have been lost in a victim’s life. Thus, it is a far greater struggle.
