Things You Can Do to Make Your Cities More Livable!

We at Cities Now believe in “Cities have the capabilities to provide something for everyone”. People need jobs for survival, they come to cities and work their way through the ill habituated environments of our cities. This process of urbanization is ever-increasing and compromising the environment and it’s capabilities of providing something for everyone. Today, we explore different things that we can do to make our city more livable and better public spaces.

Use Public transport

Gone are those days! When public transport is perceived as “transport choice for poor” (At least we hope that people does not think that way anymore). Public transportation systems are coming up with better standards and high-class infrastructure to serve the essential concept of transportation “Moving the people, not the vehicles”. Ever increasing ownership of vehicles has congested our roads and increased the carbon emissions and noise levels. Public transport provides us with cheaper, quicker and healthier modes of transportation. Many Indian cities are coming up with various public transportation models like, Bus rapid Transit, Mass rapid Transit, etc., learn more 100 smart cities campaign. Probably this is time to shift away from cars and opt a healthier and environment friendly transport mode.

Use bicycles for short distances

Studies prove that for short trips, bicycles have shown lesser travel times compared to motorized vehicles. It is evident that our cars spend most of their time either in parking or struck in traffic (emitting carbons btw.) and not to mention the time we spend in searching for a parking space. In these days of rapid congestion, it is efficient to use bicycles for shorter trips (less than 3 miles). It is a healthier mode as it helps in strengthening the hearth and physical fitness of the user. learn more about car free days.

Use bins for your litter

Every year, countless amount of public money (the money we pay as various taxes, if you are paying!) is used to pick up litter off roads and unclog the drains. Just because we are lazy to find a bin. This money can be used for better purposes like, improving basic infrastructure for remote areas within the city. Litter we thrown into the drains create a lot of mess and sinks the whole city during monsoons effectively disturbing the functionality of every system that runs the city.

Plant Trees

One must have heard this many times (used a lot in political campaigns, not judging). Yes! This an important step to effectively repair the environments we live in these days. It is a basic concept, trees inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen (we probably learned that in 4th standard) and we need oxygen. Planting tress will make our cities a little less hot and a little more livable.
