Apple Health Benefits

Behold the lowly apple, a very common fruit. However for a very common fruit it has a very uncommon number of benefits for your health. Yes; it appears that old saying that " an apple a day will keep the doctor away." has a lot more truth to it than most of us could ever imagine.

What started me down this path was a case of heartburn! My wife was a reading an article on health and natural cures and saw the suggestion that you eat an apple to cure your heartburn. I had been experiencing heartburn on a daily basis, especially at night when I laid down. We were experiencing some financial difficulties and I was feeling the stress. So I began the practice of eating an apple when I had heartburn and also right before I laid down in bed to go to sleep. Amazingly my heartburn went away. This got me to thinking about what else an apple might do for my health.

First I started to wonder, just what is in the apple that helped my heartburn. Apparently it is the apple pectin, which is a natural source of fiber is the main active ingredient for absorbing stomach acid. Apparently there is not a lot of science available to tell us why it works but I can tell you it does for me. I have also heard accounts that it worked very well for other people.

There is considerable scientific research that the apple is rich in antioxidants. These antioxidants help to prevent heart disease, Alzheimer disease, and help to prevent some kinds of cancer. Moreover, apples are rich sources of phytochemicals (compounds found in plants, fruits, and vegetables that can act as anti-oxidants). They are also rich in essential minerals like boron which helps to promote strong bone development.

The soluble fiber or pectin of the apple helps to regulate blood sugar absorption, and promotes colon health. This pectin along with the antioxidants has shown to be beneficial in lowering your harmful form of Cholesterol. These phytochemicals, antioxidants and pectin fiber are believed to slow the aging process,and some even claim it helps remove wrinkles.

One of the benefits that really caught my eye was the help they give in weight loss. The natural fiber that is contained in an apple helps in weight loss in a number of ways.The simplest and most straight forward of these ways to lose weight naturally is to eat an apple about 30 minutes before you eat a meal. This helps to fill you up with the low calorie apple and fiber and satisfies your hunger so you just don't need to eat as much to be satisfied.

The other benefit of note is to growing children.The vitamins, minerals, and fiber provided by the apple all help in the health and development of a growing child Also in these days of childhood obesity this can be a major deterrent to over eating and eating too much junk food. Most apples are sweet and satisfying and most kids love them.

In short an apple a day can do wonders for your health, helping to live longer, happier,healthier lives. Two or three a day, eaten before meals can help you regulate your weight. Apple vinegar is said to have many benefits as well, but I will talk more about that in another article. Cooking with apples can also be very healthy , but cooking will break down some of the beneficial nutrients.

Some people worry about the use of pesticides on fruit.I wish I could say that it was unfounded. I buy organic when I can, but I always thoroughly was my fruit and vegetables before I eat them. It would certainly defeat the purpose of trying to eat healthy and then poison yourself with the pesticide residue.

I have also gained the benefits of apple cider. I also love eating apples. maybe 2-3 a day. I will also take and give a shot of apple cider when eat poorly. Like deep fried, or greasy foods. Great article.

Wonderful article on the benefits of eating apples. They also clean your teeth. Something to do with acid. It acts as an astringent. I just received an email stating that some bio company in Canada has developed a GM apple that doesn't turn brown when exposed to air. They're trying to sell it to the US, so I signed a petition in protest. Being that you appreciate apples, check this out too. I'd include a link, but it's not allowed. Genetically modifying our food is not my idea of fun.

I agree, we don't need to genetically alter our food, we do not know the possible side affects of doing this. Thanks for the comment and I will check out the GM apples you refer to.
