Benefits Of Olive Oil

Olive oil has been with us since biblical times. Throughout the centuries this golden oil has been a staple in many cultures such as the Mediterranean. It has always been considered to be healthy for us. Olive oil has amazing properties that make it useful for food, beauty and medicine.

Scientific studies have given strong indications that olive oil can ward off heart attacks, strokes and cancer. It protects against arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, and it helps to control the cholesterol level.

It has been discovered that olive oil protects the liver and is particularly helpful to those suffering from hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver. It also aids the function of the gallbladder by its “cholagogue effect,” or drainage of bile.

Olive Oil and the Heart

Diets rich in olive oil can protect against blood clots by reducing the level of a substance called fibrinogen. This protein substance is a major factor of blood clots. The higher the level of fibrinogen, the greater the danger of clots forming.

Olive oil is also rich in antioxidants called polyphenols. These antioxidants can slow down hardening of the arteries.

Olive Oil and Cholesterol

It was once thought that seed oils were more beneficial than olive oil when it came to controlling cholesterol levels. However, it is now known that olive oil gives the most protection against arteriosclerosis and coronary disease.

This is because it inhibits the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which is the major substance in the production of arteriosclerosis. Seed oils are effective at reducing cholesterol, but they don’t stave off hardening of the arteries like olive oil.

Types of Olive Oil

Olive Oil is produced in a way that is more natural than the production of seed oils. Most seed oils are processed with solvents. There are no trans-fatty acids in olive oils.

Extra virgin olive oil is considered the healthiest. It is oil that is obtained from the olives by the first pressing.

Virgin olive oil is oil from the second pressing.

Pure olive oil has went through some refining and processing.

Extra light olive oil has undergone a lot of processing and has a very light flavor.

The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, nuts, cereals, legumes and olive oil. The diet as a whole is what researchers say is most beneficial to our health. But it has been speculated that olive oil is the main reason why people in countries that border the Mediterranean Sea live longer than Americans and those that consume Western diets.

With all the discoveries about olive oil and our health, it’s a good idea to have it on hand in the kitchen, and use it often!

Great article, I have been using olive oil for a number of things including cooking for about 10 years now. My wife recently discovered that adding it to her hair conditioner seems to make her hair stronger and thicker.

Hey Andrew, thanks for the tips. That's interesting how the body will not like animal based fats once it gets used to a healthy diet such as the Mediterranean diet. That's a sure sign that the meat and animal products are not good for us. Thanks for stopping by.

Georgia, I agree that olive oil is amazing. I've been using it exclusively in my cooking for the last several years. The health benefits are there, especially as a healthier and better tasting alternative to canola or animal based oils. One downside to olive oil (at least in some dishes) is that it has a lower smoking point than canola, meaning that you should have the oven fan up on high before you start cooking- otherwise that smoke alarm will go off! A former girlfriend of mine got me into the Mediterranean diet a few years ago, and I've been largely sticking to it ever since. The nice thing about it is that it's not too strict, has proven benefits, and includes foods that actually taste pretty good. You may notice that your GI may not take too well to animal based fats after a while, though. The same thing happens to people who are vegetarians or vegans and then eat meat or other animal products out of the blue.
