Big Breakfasts Are Out, All Day Breakfasts Are In: What Are they Costing Your Waistline?

In the old days, people sat down to a breakfast of eggs, toast, bacon, juice and coffee before heading off to work. Then came the days where everyone sprinted out the door with a muffin or bagel and their coffee to go. Research has suggested that breakfast is the most important meal of the day while other studies dispute that. Whether breakfast is the meal to focus on or just another meal after all does not seem to matter. More and more people are skipping the breakfast meal, choosing to eat several small morning meals before they eat lunch. According the the NPD group, a market research company, the number of people who eat at least one morning snack has increased by nearly a quarter. That number is expected to continue to climb through the year 2018.

Marketers are finding the breakfast "snack" concept a hard sell for many people though because it the part of the day when most people are still trying to choose their healthiest options. Those items need to be below three hundred calories and made with ingredients like more fiber, whole grains or antioxidants to appeal to the right segment of the market. But, even then, they may not catch on like other types of snacks have. Still, a number of companies as well as a number of fast foot franchises have started to offer the "second breakfast" menu.

Some people split their traditional breakfast foods into two smaller meals, part of the diet theory that eating small meals, evenly spaced throughout the day was much better for health and nutrition and could help with weight loss in the long run. According to Dr. David Levitsky, a professor of nutrition and psychology at Cornell University, the problem is not in how many meals people are eating or how they time them but rather in how many calories they consume each time. Levitsky said that the problem with the small meal concept is the underestimation of how many calories are in each meal. Another issue is the speed of metabolism which is different for each person. There is no way to say for sure that you are going to be actually hungry in two to three hours but if you are committed to that mentality, you might convince yourself that you have to. Instead, it is better to eat regular meals and then add snacks if you are hungry in between.

Irksy

I enjoyed reading it! I used to be very bad about not eating breakfast, especially in high school. I would go from 7 AM until 12 without food but since I was used to it, I found it hard to eat in the morning. Thankfully I've changed in the years since then and eating breakfast, no matter how small is always a good idea.

I still can't eat right after getting up, but I do a really major workout which would make me sick if I tried. I eat after I am done.

Yea, I tend to eat breakfast later after morning workouts as well. I used to feel sick to my stomach if I tried eating in the morning but I guess it's just something you have to get used to, it's different from person to person.

Good article! Those different researches tend to be very confusing, offering people total opposite directions from week to week. Each research may have it's own agenda, which is rather common these days. In my point of view, real food is living material, while snack (processed food snack) is many times made of "food-like" incredients, which include little or not at all, what average people understand of real food. Only visiting food processing manufactures truly opens ones eyes.

Oh you so should! Even if you grab a piece of fruit and some green tea (or coffee, which is actually good for you these days!) you will help your metabolism and you will feel good. I can't eat as soon as I wake up ever- only after I am finished with Insanity.

Add snacks that are not high in carbs, and you will not have as many hunger cravings. Thanks for the article.

Carbs are not always the enemy. The fact that snacks are not technically "snacks" but small meals in addition to other small meals is the problem.
