Chia Seeds: More Than Just for Your Chia Pet These Days

They burst onto the scene in time for the holidays with annoying but oddly catchy commercials. Chia pets were the "perfect" gift for that family member, friend or boss that you just could not find a thing for. Some kept them, planting the seeds and then letting the thing die off before sending them to the pits of a closet or the garage. Some were regifted, some trashed and others just donated by bewildered recipients. Now, imagine how shocked that those people are going to be when they find out that chia seeds are actually the hottest thing in the nutritional world, a do everything food item that has more than a few benefits to make it worth investigating.

Chia seeds, which are almost exclusively grown in Mexico and Bolivia are sold in a variety of forms, including ground. In addition, a wide array of products are being sold that contain the seeds already. Those products include drinks, snack foods and even organic cereals. The seeds themselves can be added to favorite recipes and sprinkled on top of cottage cheese, yogurt or even pudding. Ground seeds can be used in place of flax seeds with equal benefits and are described as easier to incorporate. Ground chia seeds have no flavor of their own.

The seeds are high in Omega 3 fatty acids as well as antioxidants, protein and fiber and while they are just now hitting the mainstream grocery stores as a food product, they have historically been consumed by people as far back as the Aztecs. Two major manufacturers will be selling their brand of food grade chia seeds. Both Dole and Nature's Path will be introducing product lines that feature or at least contain chia seeds in various forms. Nature's Path already had previously released an organic cereal and now has eight products in that line.

Juices that have suspended chia seeds are also sold in a variety of places including some grocery stores and health food or farmer's markets. Fans say that the juices are good but the texture may take some getting used to.

Like any other new food item, some caution is advised especially people with medical conditions or potential food allergies. Chia seeds also soak up liquids which is why the juices that contain them are gelatinous rather than purely liquid. If you are consuming these seeds, be sure that you are increasing the amount of water that you are drinking every day to prevent dehydration.
