Diet, Nutrition and Everyday Health
A hot and trending topic right now - child obesity America. Why has it resurfaced once again? Because finally there is a turnaround. Bravo! Recently the journal of the American Medical Association has published their results showing a decline in obesity from 13.9% to 8.4%. That is over one third. I cheered the results until I noticed one important fact - this is only for the 2 - 5 year age group range. The overall change for 2 - 19 year olds was only 0.2% (if you take out the fact that the 2-5 year age group had such a significant drop, it seems that 6-19 figures increased). Again, it is a step in the right direction, showing that the newborns will have a better start but we still need to give more focus to diet, nutrition and everyday health.
Adults Need To Change First
Kids follow their role models. For the majority of the time, wether we think that or not, it is the parents who have the greatest influence (and not the celebrities and idols). Well then, if parents are not concentrating on their health and nutrition, what chance does the child have of getting the right diet. School plays a large role in a child's life and by introducing healthier meals and eliminating unhealthy drinks from its premises is a step forward, but it is a very small step. The figures shown in the study indicate a positive results for 2-5 year olds but I ask the question, how many of those kids are in school?
It's Not Only America's Problem
Childhood obesity is spreading. As we consume more processed foods, we are passing the same habits onto our children. It is not easy to reverse this process, yet it is necessary. Governments are noticing this problem and are starting to put programs into action which aide the change. However, don't assume you have a choice of doing it now or later, make it a must to do it now. Change your eating habits by eliminating processed foods and high sugar content. Read about nutrition and which foods benefit rather than harm you. Finally, start making changes, no matter how big or small, but do it now. Small steps now can result in a dramatic change in the future. Focus more on diet, nutrition and everyday health - your kids will thank you for it!
