Coconut Oil Benefits

There are many coconut oil benefits. In the past, coconut oil got a bad reputation along with other saturated fats because they claimed to cause heart disease, obesity, and high cholesterol. In 1930, a study was done on the people in the South Pacific. Dr. Weston Price did this study and found that those who used coconut oil daily had excellent heart health and fitness, and were healthy and slim. There was no evidence of people with clogged arteries, obesity, heart disease, etc. It did nothing but good for the health of these islanders.

You can call this miracle oil the tropics best kept secret, because that's exactly what it is. Coconut oil contains naturally occurring saturated fats made up of "medium" chain fatty acids. This is a different composition when compared to the other oils containing "long" chain fatty acids. The study conducted long before Dr. Weston Price's study was conducted on hydrogenated coconut oil. Any oil that has gone through this process creates trans fatty acids or trans fats, and hence, is no longer good for you. These trans fatty acids do absolutely nothing for your health.

As shown on an episode of the Dr. Oz show, he called coconut oil a miracle food with healing super powers and highlighted three of the many coconut oil benefits: weight loss, skin disorders, and ulcers. He noted that a lot of the existing new research is showing how beneficial coconut oil is to our health. He compared coconut oil to olive oil and concluded that coconut oil is healthier, even though they both have the same amount of fat and calories per tablespoon. If Dr. Oz approves, it must be good for you!!

As mentioned earlier, because of these medium chain fatty acids, the oil is easily digested and converted to energy. The other oils which contain large chain fatty acids are not easily digested by the body and stored as fat. Another coconut oil benefit is that it treats many skin conditions such as dry, irritated skin, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, scars, and acne. Also, if you have a fungal infection, the lauric acid with it's anti-fungal properties will help fight this. Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid and the only other form of it in high levels is in human breast milk.

Another amazing coconut oil benefit is that it treats ulcers. You see, the lauric acid kills the bacteria that causes ulcers, H. Pylori. There are so many coconut oil benefits that Dr. Oz did not mention (he must not have had enough time). The most important medium chain fatty acid is the lauric acid, which makes up 50% of the coconut oil. As mentioned earlier, the only other place you can find this high level of lauric acid is in human breast milk. This fatty acid helps treat many viruses such as herpes simplex, measles, influenza, and even HIV plus many more. It's surprising how many health benefits of coconut oil there are.
