One of the nutrients that the body needs on a daily basis is Vitamins. These vitamins are organic chemical molecules or compounds that control growth, body repair, and our general health. Most vitamins are obtained from the the food that we eat. However, Vitamin D and K are two exceptions. A good source of Vitamin is 20 to 30 minutes exposure to sunlight and the intake of fish oil ,eggs and some dairy products. Vitamin K on the other hand is synthesized by bacteria in the digestive tract and can be found also in green leafty vegetables.
The importance of vitamins cannot be over stressed, as they work along with other minerals to make enzymes and hormones that are so necessary for all the mysterious chemical reactions that we need in order to live. These chemical reactions include the making of blood cells and the changing of food into energy which the body uses.
Vitamins are divided into two groups: fat- soluble and water- soluble. Vitamins A, D,E, K are fat- soluble and are stored in small amounts in the fatty tissues to be used in the future. The B and C are the water-soluable vitamins which dissolve in water and are not stored in the body. As a result of this, Vitamins B and C are so essential and should be taken on a daily basis.
Pharmacies and food stores sell multi- vitamin supplements with the age and gender of people in mind, but one should buy vitamin formula based on their health and their life style. It is wise and safer to seek the advice of a physician before embarking on a daily regimen of vitamins which most people take morning and night. One can easily overdose themselves when using vitamin supplement, or waste money, or be exposed to the risk of serious complications such as anemia, dry scaly skins, bone and joint pains, headaches, fatigue, facial flushing, liver disease, eye conditions, heartburn and even death.
We are sure that vitamins are important for our bodies. The question is- what should you eat on a daily basis? We need to know the sources of all the vitamins, how much to take and what each one does.
Many millions of Americans and others in temperate countries and colder climatic areas are not getting enough Vitamin D which us very useful for the absorption of calcium. This is because of the lack of exposure of the skin to short periods of sunlight. However, a large glass of enriched milk or a shot of cod- liver oil can provide some Vitamin D.
The B family vitamins help you to lose weight, increase your metabolism and are very good for the prevention of heart disease and cancer. They build healthy muscles and help nerves to perform theiir functions better.
Some good sources of Vitamin B are dairy, lentils and whole grain cereals; while citrus fruits, tomatoes, red or green peppers, broccoli, cabbage and strawberries are good sources of Vitamin C..
