Dangers Of Drinking Softened Water

Ya, hard water Franz here! Is one of the dangers of drinking softened water that you may be consuming too much sodium? Let’s face it, without water you will become dehydrated, lose energy, and feel tired. Water is essential to all the daily processes of the body. It is lost through normal daily bodily functions. It has to be replaced with good clean water. I have mentioned that most bottled water is not the way to go, so that leaves tap water. That is okay as long as the water from your tap is filtered and tested for purity. Many people live in areas with extremely hard water. They may be drinking water that has been treated by a softener of some kind. That can be harmful too! So, let’s look at the dangers of drinking softened water.

The suggested amount of water you should be drinking every day is about half your body weight, in ounces. So, if someone weighs one hundred and fifty pounds, they should consume about seventy-five ounces of water a day. Now if you live in an area with hard water, and you soften and filter your water, of those seventy-five ounces of water, what are you actually drinking? What are the dangers of drinking softened water? Is it harmful to you? Is there sodium in the water that you should not be drinking?

What a salt based water softener does, and most softeners are salt based, is exchange the calcium carbonate and magnesium ions with sodium or potassium ions. The calcium and magnesium are what make your water appear hard. Examples of hard water are the calcium deposits left on water fixtures and the need to use lots of soap to get any kind of lathering effect when showering. You may have noticed when staying in nicer hotels how good a shower was because the water felt “soft” and your skin felt “slick” afterward. That’s from commercial softeners using salt.

Softeners are great for showers and laundry, but terrible for drinking! As far as added sodium in the water, that is not the main issue. You may add one hundred milligrams of sodium to your body by drinking softened water for a day, which is about one twentieth of the daily allowance. But, given all the food sources that you can get too much sodium from, it all adds up. The bigger issue is that the healthy calcium and magnesium ions that give the water a good ph value are removed, in the softening process, leaving the water more acidic. Drinking acidic water lowers your bodies overall ph – not the way to go! A low ph body is susceptible to more diseases. Drinking softened water, besides its nasty taste, can be harmful if you have issues with your heart and kidneys. It really should be avoided if you are on a sodium restricted diet.

So what do you do? If bottled water is suspicious, reverse osmosis systems create acidic “dead” water, and drinking your tap water has all kinds of toxins in it, what’s left? The best solution is to get a good whole house filtration system; one with three filter canisters, to remove the everyday stuff that we know is in water. I have mentioned before that a good sediment filter, a granular activated charcoal filter, and a KDF filter are the way to go. Put these filters on your main line and drink that water. If you want to be sure if it’s working, take it to your water municipality and have them test it for you, if you don’t want to do that yourself. Then, if you really need soft water, be sure your softener is not connected to your drinking water. That way you will have healthy water to drink!

Those are the dangers of drinking softened water! Do yourself a favor and invest in a good full house filtration system, and in the long run, you will be saving money and give yourself healthy water to replenish your body. A good system will cost no more than $350 and will give you 80,000 gallons of safe drinking water.

As always, I wish you vibrant health, many blessings, and a long life!

Ya, zis is Franz signing off!
