Detox Diets - Quick Weight Loss At What Price?

Our world is a fast paced place. Everyone wants everything done yesterday. Fast food restaurants are abundant as people look for food to grab on the go.

However, eating too much fast food leads to weight gain, as well as an assortment of other ailments. In order to rid our bodies of the excess weight and chemical byproducts stored in our bodies, many people look to detoxification for quick weight loss.

There are many detox diet plans available and all of them promise to rid your body of toxins in as little as 24 hours or as long as a month. But, are detox diets good for you?

Detoxification, or detoxing as it is commonly referred to, is a method of removing toxins from your body. A detox diet plan modifies the foods you consume for a short period of time and increases your fluid intake in order to allow your body time to flush excess toxins from your body.

Detox Diet Plans on the Market Today

  • Liquid Detox Diets: When on this plan, you drink fruit and vegetable juice blends and water for 24-72 hours. No food is eaten during this time.
  • 14 Day / 30 Day Detox Diets: Some of these programs last 2 weeks, while others are up to a month long. These programs require you to drink two meals a day and eat one solid meal per day. Depending on the plan, you may or may not be allowed snacks.

Are Detox Diets Healthy?

First, before I give my opinion on these diets, I want to stress that I am not a doctor, nor a nutritionist. I base my opinions on what I have read and diets I have followed as well as what ultimately worked for me.

With that said, I do not think that liquid detox diets are healthy. The calorie intake on these diets are very low and there are many nutrients (like protein) that are missing from this plan. A quick and dramatic diet like this can cause undesirable side affects like diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, and headaches. Is a quick weight loss really worth that?

While on the 14 day or 30 day detox diet, there is a very strict list of foods that you are allowed to eat. Some of the items on the 'do not eat' list are dairy products and whole grains. Based on healthy eating guidelines published by many nutritionists as well as the USDA, both whole grains and dairy products are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and healthy weight loss program. Eliminating them for a month at a time seems counter intuitive.

Is Detoxification Necessary to Keep our Bodies Running Optimally?

Cleansing your body of toxins sounds like something we should do regularly, sort of like a spring cleaning for our bodies. However, according to medical experts, detox diets are not necessary.

Our body naturally rids itself of toxins we are exposed to through the daily functions of our livers and kidneys. According to Maria Adams, a Boston dietician, "The body is constantly filtering the toxins in alcohol, food and medicines, not storing them. So they're not going to build up."

Personally, I think that detox diet plans are drastic diets for quick weight loss and should be avoided. The best method to permanently lose weight is not a quick detox diet, and it is not a 12 week diet program. It is a lifestyle change.

Only by changing how you think about food and the types of foods that you put into your body do you achieve the balance needed to lose weight and keep it off. You can do it. Slow and steady wins the race!

Hi AJ, this is definitely a great write up. Very informative and respectful of opinions aside from your own. I personally believe a Liquid Detox is actually beneficial to ones health, nutrition wise. However, I am a big proprietor in advising others to stick to some form of 'diet' that people will ultimately be happy with. In terms of fat loss, you actually have lots of freedom what you can eat and how much you can eat , provided you keep at a deficit and consume enough protein. The problem with "diets" is that the general public often sees it as a temporary resolution to what in many cases actually turns to be a permanent problem.

Nick, you are right that most people look for a quick fix instead of the long term solution, which ultimately leads to weight gain later. Lifestyle change is the key, not dieting. Thank you for sharing your opinions with us!

For me, this is all too confusing, I have always believed that if the body needs more water you will feel thirsty. If it needs more food you will feel hungry. Detoxing sounds dangerous to me. I understand if thirsty water is best as is with hunger the correct intake of the correct food. Great article, but all too much for me at this age.

There are so many different diet programs on the market, Rob, that it is very hard to understand. My personal belief is you need to experiment with different programs that focus on eating a healthy, well balanced diet first and determine what you like and dislike about each one, and how your body responds to each. Then build a lifestyle from what you learned to lose weight and keep it off.

I can attest to how beneficial detoxing can be but not before addressing diet and being on a healthy one to start with. When 'detox' and 'diet' are used in the same sentence as a weight loss measure then I'm very cautious. Most people should realise that starvation messages are not the best path to healthy, permanent weight loss. One thing I would also say is that a good detox should never leave you feeling hungry. It should also be done with educated supervision.... especially if you're expecting it to work and start moving toxins through your system for elimination. Thought provoking, AJ, thank you.

Detox diets are a scary way to lose weight. Detoxing under a doctor or nutritionist's supervision can be beneficial for some individuals, but I believe you still need to maintain a certain calorie and nutrient content to be safe. There are a lot of "fad" diets being purchased and followed. I'm hoping people are working with their doctors to ensure they are helping and not harming their bodies. Thank you, Heather, for your insight, it was very helpful!

Good information. I have never done a detox because I was concerned about the healthiness of them. There are a lot of natural supplements that a person can take without starving themselves and they basically do the same.

Nancy, I agree with you. There are plenty of herbal options to assist the body with detoxing. Personally, I drink a detox tea a few times a week and swear by how well it assists my body with digestions as well as ridding it of excess water. I don't believe 600-800 calorie diets are the answer.

I agree with you about detox diets. When I was younger, I have had days in which I had only vegetables and fruits. I tried making the diet more "pure" by making it only fruits. I got really bad headaches. Detox diets may be harmful. However, drinking lots of water is very good for the body. It helps the body to get rid of toxic wastes.

Water really is the best thing for your body. If you feel sluggish, instead of a drastic detox diet, simply add 2 or 3 extra glasses of water that day. Or drink a cup or two of green tea. Both are great at assisting an already well designed system at flushing out toxins.
