Dieting Fortunes: There is No Single Plan for Everyone\'s Good Health And Fitness

In the fitness and dieting aisle of the local book store, diet books, recipe books and guides line the shelves. There are dieting web sites that tout the latest dieting fad. There are forums where rabid Atkins followers square off against followers of the Paleo diet. You can't pick up a magazine of any kind without some kind of diet or fitness fad gracing the corner. We all scour the entertainment news or Google how this actress lost fifty pounds in a handful of weeks or how a model was back on the runway two months after giving birth to her baby.

The reason there are so many options out there is simple- there is no one cut and dried, perfect plan that will work for everyone and many people have to go through a lot of trial and error until they come to the plan that actually gives them the results that they are interested in.

The problem with some of these diets or plans is that they are too broadly written and too generic. But it doesn't matter what fitness guru or expert is recommending the diet- it basically is not going to work for everyone the same way. Experts agree that there are too many variables for these generic approaches to be affective. For instance, one diet plan suggests eating foods based on the Glycemic Index. Each food is given a rating based on how fast it causes an increase in blood sugar in comparison to plain white bread. But, some people break down certain foods faster or slower than others making the GI rating imperfect.

Basing calorie counts on just weight alone is also a fail, according to studies. Some weight loss giants break down their plans based on height and weight as well as age with very little consideration to actual metabolic rate or exercise amount. A woman who weighs 140 pounds but does very little exercise needs far fewer calories than a woman of the same weight who is training hard five to six days a week. If the plan does not account for those differences one of the women is not going to get the results that she wants- either the sedentary woman will remain the same weight or possibly gain weight or the active woman will compromise her fitness level and performance because she is not getting enough calories to maintain her strength or her energy level as she needs.

Amie, I didn't realize we each break foods down our own speed! I guess that's how some of us get overweight all by itself. Copy eating habits of people around you who break down food faster or slower and there you go on a slippery slope to bigger collections of fat. Thanks for an interesting article.
