Does Cooking at Home Make You Live Longer?

A new research shows that people who cook the majority of their meals at home are nearly fifty percent more likely to be alive in the coming decade than those who cook less often. That study, lead by Mark Wahlquist was published in the Cambridge University journal, Public Health and Nutrition. Wahlquist was also the lead author on the published report.

The team, made up of both Taiwanese and Australian research students looked at a group of nearly two thousand men and women, all over the age of sixty five in Taiwan. To start the study, the team interviewed each participant about a number of questions including their personal lifestyle, cooking and shopping habits, how many people lived in the household, their personal diets and their education levels. Other questions, including transportation and whether or not they were smokers were also asked in this initial interview.

At the start of the study, just over forty percent of the respondents admitted that they never cooked at their homes. Almost twenty percent cooked rarely ( 1-2 times per week), almost half that number cooked more frequently, (3-5 times) and just over thirty percent cooked more than five times a week in their homes. The interviewers did not ask questions about why or why not the respondents cooked at home.

After a decade, the interviewers brought in the remaining respondents for a follow up interview. During that time, nearly seven hundred people had died from causes that were not listed in the publication. Of the remaining people, interviewers found that there was a common theme to the majority of those people. Wahlquist said in a statement that the majority of those people who were still alive were women who not cooked most of their own meals at home but were also likely to be non-smokers who used public transportation and did frequent grocery shopping.

Critics of the study suggested that there is both a gender and cultural bias at work here, especially in the chosen area. Most women, especially those in the studied age group are expected to cook for their family and for themselves which increases the likelihood that they would respond that way. In addition, women typically live longer than men by nature which may have also skewed some of the results.

The takeaway lesson from the study is simple. Cooking at home is far healthier than eating out, even at the so called "healthy" restaurants because you control ingredients, spices and cooking methods.
