Eat Up! Best Foods for A Concussion

How does it feel change a routine that you've had for well, probably your whole life? It can often be challenging. But, if you're one of the 2+ million people who the CDC estimates gets a concussion each year, you're facing somewhat of a challenge ahead of you. For those of us who have been reluctant to eat healthy food all along, it's probably even more challenging to eat healthy now that you have a concussion, or post concussion syndrome.

But...what if you realized, that your food choices could make or break your concussion healing? Does that make it any easier to make the decision to eat differently? No, not really. Even though it can be difficult to change what you like to eat for breakfast, lunch, or just grazing around, it's probably a good idea to think about your choices - if you could do anything in the world to make your concussion go away, would you?

That's a place to start. Think about the headaches, maybe nausea, mood swings, exhaustion, dizziness...whatever has now firmly planted itself inside your brain, body, relationships, & life in general and refuses to go away. Now, think calm, alert, accomplished, laughter, focus. It'd be nice to feel that way, wouldn't it? I sure think so. So the thing is - there's tons of studies on food and brains and football players and lots of amazing stuff. We don't need to get into the details, because, if you have a concussion it's likely too much information.

Let's look at some of the best foods for concussions. You can think about it like an at-home treatment plan.

  • Avocado : try some guacamole! So good for your brain that you could probably never eat enough. (Not that I'm saying you should try!)
  • Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, kiwis, plums, cherries
  • Oatmeal - easy nourishing breakfast (with yogurt, blueberries, walnuts!)
  • Walnuts - if you look closely they actually look like a brain. Any nuts or seeds are great because of the omega-3's.
  • Protein! Eggs, lean meat, yogurt, even bacon! That became my favorite after my concussion, though I made sure to always buy pasture-raised because it makes a difference in the nutrition quality.
  • Fish can be one of the best choices too, but you could also take fish oil because of it's highly beneficial effects in studies of concussions - even NFL football players had great positive results with a daily regimen of high-dose fish oil.
  • broccoli, cabbage, spinach, anything green, just do it. Even if you need to get a nutritional powder type drink to get those green veggies in.
  • Drink loads of water

These are some of the best foods for concussions. It can be helpful to set up a daily routine so that you are eating in a consistent way, because your brain needs consistent nourishment now. It's expending so much energy to heal and that's why you don't feel good.

It does make sense to reduce sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and any artificial colors/flavors - they can make your symptoms much, much worse. Try to find healthy substitutes like chai tea with milk and honey. But please don't use the whole bottle of honey because it's better for you.

It can be common for some to lose their taste, or have their tastes drastically change after a concussion. So try these foods, and see how it works for you. The next step to healing your concussion is looking into other concussion treatments that you can do to help your self feel better.

What do you think you'll eat first?
