Eating Junk Food May Increase Your Risk Of Depression

A study published in the journal Public Health Nutrition has found a solid link between eating certain types of foods, including baked goods, fast foods and others may dramatically increase the risk of depression. That study comes after research by teams at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Granada showed that people who ate the highest amounts of these foods were also the most likely to be diagnosed as depressed. In addition, the same research showed that frequent junk food consumers were also more likely to be sedentary, smokers and to work more than forty five hours per week, all factors that could also increase depressive risks.

The study looked at nearly nine thousand people, all without a diagnosis of depression and not taking medications at the start of the study. Researchers tracked participants in terms of their diet and their depression statistics for at least six months on average. At the end of the research study, nearly five hundred people had been diagnosed as depressed with many taking antidepressants. Researchers concluded that more than half of the people who ate the most junk food were also the most likely to become depressed.

This is not the first study to link bad foods with the risk of depression, however. Another, this one reported by the Mayo Clinic, showed that diets that were highest in fried foods, processed meats and other low quality types of foods were at the highest risk of depression, mimicking this study's results. A third study, published in the journal PLoS ONE showed that there is potential link between consuming trans fats and being irritable and aggressive. That study, done by a team at the University of California, San Diego showed that this increased intake of trans fats impacted mood and behavior regardless of age, gender and other factors. Trans fats are most often found in the very junk food that are discussed in the other studies, including commercially prepared baked goods and most fast foods.

None of the studies have been able to directly link the foods as the cause of the depression, only linking them to an increased risk. In the case of the study by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the length of the study was also troubling to critics, saying that perhaps a longer term study should be done. In addition, other studies will need to be designed to find the exact mechanism of how these foods increase depression symptom risks/.
