Extending the Fasting Period Each Day May Counteract A High Fat Diet

New research by scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have suggested that having regular eating times as well as fasting for longer periods of time each day may be able to help override the harmful health effects of a higher fat diet. That may also potentially help to reduce the risks of developing diabetes and liver disease as well as reducing obesity. That research is being published in a paper in the journal, Cell Metabolism.

The study, which used mice, compared limited eating times and unlimited eating and their effects on the bodies, weight and other health factors of each. The research was lead by Satchidanda Panda, the Associate Professor in the Biology Lab at Salk Institute. The study was meant to disprove the hypothesis that a high fat diet always leads to obesity as well as the ongoing theory that a person should eat frequently throughout each day, during waking hours. Currently, the experts recommend eating small meals every two to three hours while awake to keep metabolism stoked and to prevent weight gain. Panda and the study team hoped to show that this was not always true and that extended fasting could be beneficial.

The mice were divided into two groups, both getting a similar diet with a high amount of fat. The first group was allowed to eat freely. The scientists found that the nocturnal mice rarely ate more than a few nibbles of their food during the day, sticking to eating most of their calories at night. The second group of mice was only allowed to eat the high fat food during a set, eight hour period. Two other groups of mice were used as the controls and fed a more standard diet which had a much lower fat percentage.

After one hundred days the mice with the high fat diet and unrestricted eating had gained weight, had higher blood sugar levels and evidence of liver damage. They also had lower motor control as evidenced by a number of physical tests. The mice who had been forced to fast, however did not have any health issues despite eating the exact same foods that the others had been given. Those mice also performed better on the exercise tests.

Next up, researchers are aiming to perform a similar study with human subjects trying to prove that it may not be just the content but the timing of meals that can cause weight gain or loss.
