Fake Foods Can Create Real Body Responses And Real Fat

Susan E. Swithers, Ph. D, Psychology Professor at Purdue University is the lead author for a recently released study which showed how fake foods, particularly olestra, the synthetic fat substitute may play a major role in tricking the body and may interfere with the body’s own ability to regulate food intake and calorie burning.

Dieters have long looked for ways to reduce their calories without having to give up their favorite foods. A stroll down the grocery store aisles shows how far they will go for those desires- with no fat and low fat foods in virtually every section of the average store. Those labels may cause calorie confusion with people assuming that low fat may mean low calories when that is simply not true at all.

In 1996, a new food additive, this one a synthetic fat substitute called Olestra was introduced. Olestra had been accidentally discovered in 1968 and had originally been petitioned for approval as a cholesterol treatment drug but failed to realize the results needed for such approval by the FDA. Used as a food additive, Olestra was included in potato chips and other typically higher calorie snacks. However, olestra based foods caused a number of symptoms that included abdominal cramping, diarrhea and the potential loss of valuable vitamins.

Now, according to Swithers and her colleagues, olestra and other fake foods, olestra might have more serious problems as well. In her study, two groups of rats were fed either high fat or low fat foods. In each group, half of the rats were given high calorie, high fat chips. The other half of the rats were given high calorie chips on part of the days and lower calorie chips on the others.

For the rats on the high fat diet, both groups did gain weight and did eat more food. They all also developed more fatty tissue as well. But, the fat rats who were eating the chips of both kinds, did not lose weight when the chips were removed from their diet and their food switched to the lower calorie version.

Certain foods create certain reactions in the body. When the body thinks it is about to get something fatty or sweet, there are a number of chemical, hormonal and physical reactions, including increased saliva production, hormonal secretions and metabolic reactions. When the foods turn out to be “wrong” the body reacts by craving more foods, continuing until it gets what it wants.

Swithers points out in the study that the use of artificial sweeteners and synthetic fats has increased dramatically in the past three decades, corresponding to the increase in the rate of obesity in the United States. While other countries are also having their problems with obesity, their rates are still lower than that of the US. Certain food additives, including olestra are also not as popular in other countries. Olestra, for instance, is banned in both the UK and in Canada.

Good article. People need to be educated on the harm that artificial sweeteners and synthetic fats have on their bodies.

Diet pops can really have this impact. I know first hand as I am an avid diet coke drinker. A glass of this is typically followed by the urge to eat junk food, whereas a glass of water does not produce these sort of cravings. Great article!
