Health Benefits Of Coffee: 3 Tricks to Make it Even Healthier

Is drinking coffee really a bad habit or is it just the way people prepare their coffee (with all its sweeteners and creamers)? While too much sleep could be a symptom of caffeine deprivation, I think we all pray as we drink our first cup of the day. Although drinking too much coffee can probably make you thread a sewing machine while it’s running, a new study has put drinking coffee in the list of top 10 “bad” habits that are actually good for you. The study indicated that if you drink not more than 3 cups of coffee a day the caffeine content will be able to:

  • increase your metabolism
  • increase your energy and endurance
  • reduce risk of gallstone (even kidney stones)
  • reduce risk of diabetes
  • reduce the possibility of getting depressed

Coffee is also a good source of antioxidants if one cannot eat sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables. So, drinking coffee with moderation has health benefits. But I will give you 3 tricks to make it even healthier.

  1. Avoid artificial sweeteners. Instead of adding highly processed sweeteners, which may contain additives that can greatly increase the level of calories in your body, you may sweeten your coffee with organic maple syrup or natural stevia. So, if you are ordering brewed, latte, or cappuccino from a coffee shop, have it unsweetened and use your own natural sweeteners instead, to make your own cup of coffee healthier.
  2. Avoid artificial creamers. Artificial creamer may contain partially hydrogenated oil (alias trans fat) in it, which is harmful to your body. A very good replacement to artificial creamer would be a real full-fat cream or coconut milk/cream in cans. Coconut milk contains healthy saturated fats and is known to strengthen your immune system. Coconut milk in a coffee is simply delicious - you got to try it.
  3. Add Ceylon cinnamon (not Cassia) to your coffee. Study shows that having half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day is enough to lower bad cholesterol in your body. Cinnamon spice can
  • help you lose weight
  • reduce production of leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells
  • relieve pain caused by arthritis
  • regulate blood sugar
  • improve cognitive function and memory

Adding cinnamon into your coffee will make a uniquely tasteful experience. But while cinnamon has great health benefits, it also has little side effects that are worth considering.

If you are creative enough, I’m sure you can come up with adding other healthy mixtures to your cup of coffee.

With all the health benefits of coffee mentioned above, I want to create a balance by mentioning also the downside of caffeine. You can actually get addicted to caffeine if you have too much of it, and may suffer headache if you cannot have your usual amount of coffee cups for the day. This is the reason why I drink coffee only once a day.

Coffee is loaded with good health benefits, but if you want other options that are low in caffeine, have various teas (black, white, green, and oolong).

"drinking too much coffee can probably make you thread a sewing machine while it’s running," -- Haha! That was very funny and brought about a funny image! Good coffee advice here. Didn't know about cinnamon either. I like using a french press to make mine because it's less bitter.

Coffee is not yet in the fitness manuals but I believe it will be there soon (as an alternative) because it is such a powerful antioxidant. Most people who eat less fruits and vegetables get their antioxidants from coffee. Although some records show that coffee prepared in coffee shops can reach up to 400 calories, so using your newly found natural sweeteners can really make your coffee cup healthier. Thanks for the visit Robbie

Good article. I've read some studies that indicate that another benefit of coffee compounds (and antioxidants found in other foods) can have a positive effect on heart health as well. The condensed version of the story is that those antioxidants help reduce LDL cholesterol, which might otherwise build up in arteries to the point that blood pressure gets too high. That could result in a heart attack or stroke. BTW, Lemuel, I think people are starting to wake up and smell the (benefits of) coffee and other antioxidant rich foods. I was just at the grocery store this morning, and the spice aisle was choc full of advertisements about the antioxidant benefits of several different spices. Apparently McCormick is trying to target a new demographic.

Howdy, Shawn. I'm actually preparing for an article featuring cinnamon as the only topic. it's the number 1 spice that fights abdominal fat. But reports show that Cassia is more abundant in American markets than Ceylon cinnamon (there is a confusion between the two). Cassia is loaded with side effects.

Hello John. I'm glad that coffee is getting good reviews lately. I strongly agree that the artificial sweeteners and creamers were the ones that put coffee very high in calories. Replacing them with your newly found natural sweeteners and creamers will definitely make coffee a handy antioxidant. Coconut and cinnamon are also at the top list of ab fat fighters.

I love coffee and drink organic decaf French roast from Whole Foods, but only for breakfast. Must try the coconut milk with a dash of cinnamon. That sounds really good. Thanks for the helpful article on the benefits of coffee.

Hi Joan. That would make your healthy cup of coffee loaded with powerful antioxidants. That's very good. I like organic decaf, too. I think drinking coffee once a day will be good enough, because the antioxidants of coffee can also be found in fruits and vegetables. Thanks for reading.

I have friends whose kids are allergic to regular milk. Coconut milk makes a great substitute in the recipes they use. I'll bet they'll enjoy hearing that there are benefits to that, too.
