Healthy Breakfast Menu: Learning The Code To Understanding What You Are Reading

The goal: getting a healthy breakfast down the throats of everyone in your family. The problem: the family. Like so many other parents all over the country, you have reached the end of your rope trying to talk, beg, wheedle, whine and threaten your way into getting those people into eating healthy foods. Now, you have pulled out all the stops. You are taking them to a restaurant so that they can eat something off of the healthy breakfast menu and get an idea of what will be expected from them from now on.

But, once you get there and the hostess seats you, you open the page to the healthy breakfast menu and get more and more confused. Why are there some things listed here and also listed on other parts of the menu? If they are “healthy” on one page, are they no longer healthy on the other part? Can you order smaller portions of favorite foods from the regular menu or do you have to stick to the healthy breakfast menu? Should you really pay nearly ten dollars for a bowl of fruit?

One of the things about the healthy breakfast menu that you will notice is the sneaky way that they break other food platters up and offer them at slightly higher prices a la carte. You can mix and match these foods or eat a single food. The problem becomes portion control. Even though it is a healthy food, you cannot eat unlimited amounts of it. Read the full description of the foods on the healthy breakfast menu to make sure that you are actually getting something with true benefits. A whole egg omelet with cheese is not as healthy a choice as an egg white omelet with veggies, for instance.

Back to the ten dollar bowl of fruit on that healthy breakfast menu. If you are thinking that might be your best choice there; think again. If it is fresh fruit and nothing but fresh fruit, you are in the clear, however, if it is fruit that is packed in heavy syrup or preservatives of any kind, you would be better off with the bacon and eggs and for the calorie count on that sugary bowl of ruined fruit, you could throw in a piece of toast as well.

The healthy breakfast menu should give you some nutrition guidelines, including the calorie counts and other information. Even the fast food places have this information on hand so there is no excuse for a restaurant not having a calorie count available to you. Talk to your family about what a good choice is and then sit back and watch them eat. They are not going to get all of the lessons at one time. They are not going to learn everything they need to learn just by reading one healthy breakfast menu. It will take time for all of them to learn.
