How Adding Spices And Herbs Can Affect Your Health – Part 4 Garlic

In my fourth part of the article series – how adding spices and herbs can affect your health, we’re going to take a look at one of my absolute favorites – garlic.

Garlic happens to be one of my favorite spices when cooking. Unfortunately many people shy away from garlic because they are afraid of bad breath or that they will smell bad. Bad breath due to garlic is easy to remedy by chewing on parsley or gargling lemon juice or coconut oil. Using chewing gum is other ways an easy alternative. Good hygiene on a daily basis will remove the other problem plus the more often you eat garlic the less you smell as the body gets used to it. The benefits of garlic are astounding and outweigh the hassle of putting a bit of gum in our mouths by a million to one.

Garlic has different potent sulphurs containing compounds which give garlic its characteristic pungent odour. One of the vital compounds called Allicin is known to have great antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial properties and it’s also full of beneficial antioxidants. It’s also a great source of selenium. These compounds along with Alliin and Ajoene has a beneficial effect on our digestive, immunological and circulatory systems which helps us to lower our blood pressure and helps our detoxification and healing just to mention a few.

This excellent spice is probably most famous for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. When used in its fresh form it’s used in preventing food poisoning because it kills nasty bacteria such as salmonella and E coli etc.

Garlic helps treat fungal skin infections like athletes foot and ring worm.

It’s brilliant for reducing blood pressure and helps in preventing the formation of blood clots in our arteries. If we want to protect our hearts against cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks and atherosclerosis garlic helps in keeping our arteries and veins ability to stretch even as we grow older. Garlic also protects our hearts from free oxygen radicals that are extremely damaging.

It reduces cholesterol, lowers blood triglycerides and reduces arterial plaque formation.

Since it has such brilliant anti-inflammatory properties it’s a good source in the fight against allergies. Use raw garlic juice to stop itching rashes and bug bites.

Because garlic is so good for our immune system it can severely reduce the amount, frequency and duration of cold and flues, it also helps to lessen the hardships of upper respiratory tract infections. It promotes expectoration which makes it irreplaceable in relieving symptoms of chronic bronchitis. When it comes to other respiratory problems such as asthma, difficulty in breathing etc. it has shown to be a priceless medicine.

People that suffer from diabetes benefit from using garlic in their diet because it increases insulin release which regulates blood sugar levels.

Try it on warts and corns and you will see an improvement in these conditions.

If you eat garlic on a daily basis it has been found to lower the risk of most types of cancer types.

It’s excellent for reducing and maintaining weight because according to recent studies garlic regulates the formation of fat cells in our bodies. Garlic increases our circulation which also makes it an aphrodisiac.

If you suffer from toothaches, crush some fresh garlic and put it on the problem area and it will relieve your aches and symptoms.

So please go ahead and be kind to your self – use garlic in your cooking. It’s delicious, heartwarming and works wonders on your body.
