How Many Calories In A Apple? What the Doc Says!

How many calories in a apple? The thing to remember when considering apples as part of a calorie-counting diet is that this fruit is in the mid to low range of calories per whole fruit and very high in antioxidants. Just as the good ol’ saying goes, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”... and it’s no joke! Apples have been found to help prevent certain diseases and be extremely helpful in preventing cancers including colon (high fiber content), lung and prostate.

High in Fiber? Apples and apple juice are an excellent choice for increasing fiber into your diet. This then helps you regular weight loss and improves bowl movements (hence reducing risk of colon cancer too). Apples also help reduce cholesterol levels by reducing the buildup within the lining of blood vessel walls. This then helps to prevent heart disease and atherosclerosis. Apples are often “prescribed” by doctors who are helping patients to improve their overall health as they are packed full of many health benefits plus they are generally an inexpensive food item.

Good for Weight-loss? Knowing how many calories in a apple is an important questions, especially to those who are on calorie restricted diets. It depends, however, on the size of course, but generally speaking a regular to smaller size apple has about 55 calories, whereas a large apple may contain up to approximately 80 calories. Apples are an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals and (as already mentioned) are one of the most fibrous of fruits.

Found within a medium apple is typically the following nutritional content: Iron; Potassium; Vitamin C; Vitamin A; Folate; Dietary Fiber; Calcium; Phosphorus

Eating the skin? Yes. Peeling the skin off an apple is not going to provide you with nearly the same amount of fiber or vitamin c as you would get from eating the apple’s skin. Plus, the skin contains the flavor and delicious aroma that we associate with apples. If you’re wondering how many calories in a apple without its skin, well honestly it doesn’t dramatically affect the number, plus you are reducing a lot of the health benefits when you peel the skin off. So, unless you are baking apple pie, keep the peel.

When choosing foods that are part of a well balance diet geared towards weight loss, apples are a very good “ingredient”. You shouldn't worry so much about how many calories in a apple because there are other things that add up in caloric content that do not provide nearly the kind of wide-spread nutritional benefits that apples do. Plus, every dieter needs to curb the sweet tooth at some point. Opting for fresh organic fruit is a much better choice than any low-fat, low-calorie, sugar-free dessert found in the freezer aisle. Trust what the doctor ordered!
