How Many Calories Should I Be Eating to Lose Weight?

Every diet expert, guru and fitness writer will tell you the same thing: you have to eat fewer calories than you need if you would like to lose weight. You can increase the number of calories that you burn through exercise but if you are still overeating, you will not lose weight. If you don't read another word, you absolutely must read these: you cannot outwork a bad diet. Period.

The number of calories that you should be eating is different from any one else. To lose a pound per week ( an accepted and safe amount) you should be decreasing your calorie count per day by 500. But, before you can decrease the amount that you are eating, you need to know where you should be starting. After all, you cannot just make up a random number at will and work with that. There are a number of factors that will change your calorie needs. Your body is of a different weight than anyone else's. You have a different activity level than others. How much exercise you get will influence your caloric needs as well. There are a number of different formulas online that you can use- simply plug your height, current weight plus your goal weight into them and they will tell you exactly how many calories you should be eating to either maintain your weight or to lose. Most of these calculators will let you see how much you will need to drop from your diet to lose one, two or even three pounds or more per week.

While it might seem strange, cutting your calories down too low can actually slow or completely stop your weight loss efforts. Your body needs the right fuels to lose weight and for most people it is probably a lot higher than they would assume. Many people are shocked when they use the calorie calculators and find out that they should be eating much more than what they are already consuming. The right amount of calories allows your body to function at its very best, including losing weight.

Yes, it is important to know how many calories you should be consuming each day but it equally important to know how to divide those calories up. Not only should you be thinking about the foods that you are eating but the timing of the meals as well. Don't think that you can save all of your calories for one big blow out meal and be okay just because you are coming in at or near the daily calorie count. Your body just does not work that way. Metabolism is a very complex process and any disruption, including not eating enough or overloading your body with too many calories all at once will cause it to fail.
