How To Start Eating Healthier

When trying to lose weight or improve the way your body looks, it is no big secret that eating healthy plays a major role in the journey. Often times we see people go to the gym three to four times a week and do hours of cardio and weight training and see very little to no results. Chances are they are still eating foods that are highly processed and full of excessive amounts of sugar, sodium and other additives that are not good for the body.

While eating food is a necessity to survive and provide our bodies with fuel, eating can also be seen as a habit. There are good habits and there are bad habits. People have good eating habits and they have bad eating habits. In both cases these habits are formed over a period of time in which we become accustomed to eating certain foods.

As with any habit, going from eating unhealthy to eating healthy is not something that will happen overnight. Take for example a heavy smoker or a drug addict. If you were to tell either one to put down their respective vices for good starting tomorrow, you can bet your bottom dollar there is more than likely going to be a relapse in the near future, and the same principle applies when you are trying to start eating healthy.

When it comes to nutrition and forming good habits, you want to form habits that are going to last and you also want to slowly ween yourself out of your bad habits. So you've finally made the decision to make a change in your lifestyle and eat healthier, what is the first thing you do?

One of the most effective ways to achieve this is to make a list of everything you currently eat that is bad for you, and a list of things you would like to start incorporating into your diet that are good for you. For example cookies, chips, fast food, candy, chocolate, soda (you get the point here)...would be things you would put on this list. Then you would set yourself a series of tangible goals that are going to help you remove these types of foods from your everyday diet.

One by one and at different intervals (these intervals will be the goals that you ave set for yourself, for example within one week you want to reduce the number of cans of soda you drink from four a day to two a day) you are going to begin reducing or cutting out these bad foods until over a period of time you are no longer consuming them or have greatly reduced the amount that you consume.

Obviously there is rarely only one way to do things and the same holds true with starting to eat healthy. Some people may be able to quit eating junk cold turkey and instantly take on a healthier diet, whereas others may need a transitional period in which they work on reducing the intake of certain foods and cutting certain foods out.
