Do you remember a time, not so long ago, when your hunger was happily satisfied by diving into your refrigerator and pulling out an assortment of goodies that you felt completely safe eating? The food was of the variety you liked to eat and it was fresh and clean. You didn't have to give it a lot of thought.
Hmmm, let's see now...a sandwich would hit the spot. How about roast beef, or tomato and cheese on rye, or tuna salad.
Did you ever feel you needed to question the healthiness of any of those ingredients? Did you question what was in the Hellman's mayonnaise, or Gulden's mustard? Heck, you have been eating that stuff since you were a child. Heinz ketchup is a staple in the American diet. And white bread? It was preferred over whole grain bread when I was young. Like all my friends, I grew up on Wonder Bread...you know, that plastic tasting fluffy white stuff that was an essential ingredient in the school lunch box. After all, it grew strong bodies eight ways.
"I'm hungry" presented many options.
Now, if you were ravenously hungry, you could trot over to the local eatery and get a good meal that tasted almost homemade. If that didn't suit you, you could go to a burger joint or stop at the grocery store for a bag of cookies.
Not the healthiest choices, but not bad if these foods were made of pure ingredients, and if they were real foods and not genetically modified freak foods.
The shocking, sobering reality is that our foods have been tampered with.
Is anything sacred anymore? Not only is much of our food genetically modified, but it is full of preservatives and pesticides, heavy metals, and toxins such as arsenic, not to mention an assortment of additives that do one thing or another, none of which benefit us in any way. They are Frankenfoods.
Our food supply is looking like fertile material for a hair raising science fiction movie from the 1950's.
It could never happen here. Oh yeah? It's happened right here in the USA, of all places. Never in my wildest imagination, would I have thought my own beloved country would go down such a wrong path. We have succumbed to the same kind of hubris that led to the ruination of Atlantis. Are we too clever for our own good?
The US government has "sold out", and sold us out to corporate interests.
We are not being protected by our own government when it comes to our food supply and our environment.
Yes, I am outraged, hence the reason I am writing this article to make sure that as many people as I can reach will hear this message and take action. It is too serious, too far reaching to sweep under the carpet. It affects the entire planet. All of us!
Agreed, it's not the jolliest message to hear. In the interest of our own survival, and that of our children, we must be aware of what is taking place right under our very noses.
We must stop the infestation of GMO foods.
GMO stands for genetically modified organism.
GM foods or Biotech foods are the end products of genetically modified crops or fish, and other animals. The genes of different species are spliced and added to the genome of a plant, fish, or animal, and generated by the biolistic method or particle gun, in which the genes of these species are forced into the gene pool of another species. Scientists are taking the genes from an eel and splicing them to the genes of salmon. That's what you are eating when you eat farmed Atlantic salmon. The purpose of that technology is to make the salmon grow faster, and grow year round.
GM poses a tremendous risk. There is so much wrong with genetically modifying food. First of all, there has been little study in regard to the consequence of tampering with genes in this way. We don't have any idea what will happen to us, to our food, to our environment, to our planet as a result of this technology. There has been insufficient testing. We have no idea what will happen if modified salmon comes into contact with wild salmon. Will it change the DNA of wild salmon? They are playing a dangerous game with nature.
I see it as careless, irresponsible and deadly science.
The reason corn has been modified is to make sure it survives the pesticides that are sprayed on it. It is also modified to produce its own pesticide in order to kill insects that might attack it. What might that do to your body when you eat the corn? These pesticides are manufactured by Monsanto. Monsanto is responsible for the bio technology involved in modifying corn and other grains and plant life. That means that Monsanto controls the entire process. They even coerce/bully the farmers into buying their seed, thus putting farmers out of business, but only after torturing them with law suits and other terror tactics.
Approved by the Supreme Court, our patent laws make it possible for the results of this technology to become subject to intellectual property law. That means that Monsanto and other bio-technology companies can create freak seeds and animals and control the world's entire food resources. Just think about the implications of this.
Does it strike you as evil? It does me. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are being railroaded by profit mongers.
Monsanto has the complete cooperation of our government agencies. That includes the FDA, USDA, and EPA.
Our government is doing nothing to stop Monsanto. As a matter of fact, our political leaders have been instrumental in trying to force GMO foods on the rest of the world. George Bush claimed it was an illegal trade barrier to reject GMO foods and seeds in other parts of the world. NAFTA forced GMO corn into Mexico and infected the corn crop through cross pollination with indigenous corn, hence polluting Mexican corn. Hilary Clinton has been encouraging other nations to adopt GMO foods. Farmers have been committing suicide because their life's work has been destroyed by Monsanto along with the cooperation of our government. Monsanto, with the cooperation of the federal government is bankrupting the small farmers by forcing them to buy Monsanto GM seeds at costs the farmers cannot afford.
If allowed to continue, Monsanto and our government will drive out the organic farmers too, through unfair legislation by way of a federal bill with conditions these farmers can't possibly meet. What choices would we have then, if organic farmers ceased to exist?
It presents a grim scenario for sure, but there is light at the end of this tunnel.
Hopefully, Proposition 37 will pass in California on November 6th. Proposition 37 is a bill before the California state legislature. If it passes, it will make GM labeling in the state of California mandatory. There is good reason to believe the bill will pass. Excellent news for the rest of us, because the other states will probably follow.
We have a right to know what is in our food. GM must be clearly indicated on labels. The reason GM hasn't been put on labels is because Monsanto knows we won't buy those foods. It's terrifying how many people are not aware that many of their favorite foods are genetically modified. The food industry has taken unfair advantage of the consumer.
Learn what foods are genetically modified and boycott them. Don't eat their poison. Search out organically grown food. I know it's expensive, but medical costs are more expensive, not to mention the irreversible conditions that can be caused by careless science.
Patronize local farmers, particularly organic farmers. With the business they receive from you and others, they will be able to bury some of their costs in the profit from the volume of business from your patronage, and their prices will come down. At the same time, if we boycott GMOs, they won't be profitable and Monsanto will be forced to stop producing them. That is, until they think up the next nightmare.
Sadly, it seems, gone are the days we can assume our health is being protected by the federal government. Protect your own health and the health of your family by taking matters into your own hands.
I'm hungry, what should I eat? Eat organic foods and all foods that are certified free of GMOs.
Nice coverage of this very serious issue. The biggest thing I`ve noticed is how they`ve managed to ruin tomatoes. When I was a kid they tasted completely different but now they make me want to yak! GMO`s are just the tip of the iceberg of food tampering too...
Awesome! I'm in Oregon, so if California's labeling foods, it'll make shopping so much easier. Thanks for the heads up. My breakfast bar was labeled 70% organic with 9 grams protein and 4 core essentials. As people buy there will be businesses that notice and follow the market. We are the market, thanks for the reminder of the power of the buying public.
i read your article today and found it very informative. i hope it will be of help to so many others. thank you very much.
Joan............ I am having a problem with re- publishing my article #10 they have rejected it twice because it has duplicate content....the duplicate content is the ad for my article from when I published it the first time as #10...the content is on the page of Annie Nogradys "Antibiotics may help with certain sinus issues: Medicines may not be the answer" then when it says "You may also like" it has my article #10 first....and gives the words they say are duplicate content....Do you know how to help me with this....please.... sister kaite
Kaite, There's a flaw in this system regarding duplicate content. You're going to have to get around it by tweaking the words a little bit that they call duplicate content, or email admin. My vote is for tweaking the targeted content. May be a matter or changing just one word with a word that means the same. I know it's a nuisance. Hope this does it for you.
thanks so much for your reply Joan....I put a comment on the blog because it says there is where you make suggestions or ask for help but no one has replied to it yet...thanks I think I will just have to go ahead and rewrite the part I did not want to rewrite....you are right.....thanks again k
Kaite, Are you a premier member at WA? Is your username at WA Sister Kaite? The reason I'm asking is because I want to share some information about salvestrols and something else too. Can I send you a PM at WA? Btw, I hope your duplicate content issue got worked out.
This is my favorite article Joan.....i will reciprocate again shortly with another article on GMO...I have found some new facts to write about with it....to link to this one......thanks.....k
Brilliant article, I completely agree with you. GMOs are dangerous and Monsato is worrying. Thanks for educating us!
Thanks Charlotte Jane. GMOs are even more dangerous than that. I worry about generations to come if this continues. We are told that so many things we do are harmless, and it's a lie. We trust our established institutions to know what's right for us and they are often wrong, and we end up paying for it with our health. We all have to think for ourselves. Appreciate your comment and agreement.
You are such a positive contributor with your great informative articles. Back in the 70's a character named Dick Gregory warned folks sbout genetically engineered food. There were quite a few folks shouting warnings back then. What is interesting is that you don't hear from them any more. So, I am grateful for your input on this subject.
Thanks Lewis. I remember Dick Gregory and actually attended one of his lectures. He was quite passionate and dynamic. Where is he now? It upsets me how much is perpetrated on innocent people. And that includes drugs that are not necessary and harmful. I think drugs should be used as a last resort when other less invasive measures fail. Well, that's the topic for another article.
Absolutely agree and more and more people are now becoming aware - a few years ago people used to look at me as if I came from another planet when I made comments on our "unhealthy food". Governments have been making decisions on our behalf for too long and in most cases these decisions have been wrong. Having said that are we better off knowing? You have to say yes but then, as you started this article by saying, it makes wanting something to eat a dilemma rather than a straightforward occurrence - perhaps ignorance is bliss? Only joking - it just stops you being scared of your food!
Hi Sue, it may not be as innocent and comfortable as the old days when we were ignorant, but it'll save our lives to know. There are still people who don't want to hear about it, but we can't make things better by burying our heads in the sand. If we choose the right foods and insist on labeling, then there will be no reason to be afraid. Thank you for your comments.
Yes!! your right. I get so scared to eat anything from china. We are the greatest nation in the world. So why are we being sold all this crap. Keep telling people about this!!! Got to stop!!!
Don't blame you. I wouldn't eat anything from China. Read labels. There are symbols that tell you where the food comes from . They don't always mention countries by name. Probably a good idea to familiarize yourself with the symbols. Thanks for commenting Harriet.
