Is Corn Healthy For You?

A few days ago Franz wrote about the harm from genetically modified food and the foods that were most likely to fall into this category. Corn is one of the crops that have been genetically modified. But is corn a food that we really need to eat anyway and is corn healthy for you?

Americans eat too many grains in their diet which is one of the problems leading to obesity and diabetes. If you ask Franz he will tell you that we don't need a lot of grains in our diet. Our bodies were not designed to handle large amounts of bread, pasta, and corn without the unhealthy effects gradually showing up.

Now a little corn on the cob now and then is fine, but don't think that it is a good vegetable choice to include with your meal plan. Corn is not actually a vegetable but a grain. It is excess grains that get us in trouble and corn is the leader of the pack: corn cereal, corn chips, and all the other corn based processed foods. As an example let's look at the Hispanic diet of corn tortillas used as a main staple of their diet. Their dietary choices have yielded some of the highest rates of obesity and diabetes in the country. Are you starting to figure out the answer to the question is corn healthy for you?

Eating corn creates a lot of excess sugar in the blood stream once digested. This spikes insulin levels making you hungrier and forcing your body to store fat. People think that just because something does not taste sweet that it has no sugar effect on your body. Once you eat foods made with corn your body quickly converts this dense grain into sugar. This spikes your blood sugar levels and forces insulin to store the excess as fat. And then you will find yourself craving more carbohydrate type foods.

Is corn healthy for you? Well, corn is a lousy source of protein as it is lacking the essential amino acids that your body needs and can't manufacture on its own. Corn is also lacking in minerals like calcium and B vitamins. Corn oils are high in omega 6 fats which are extremely inflammatory for the body if too many are consumed. If you consume more omega 6 fats then omega 3 fats you suffer the risk of disease and increased weight. Using corn oil to cook with even makes the problem worse as when it is heated it is even more toxic. So for higher heat cooking avoid corn oil and use coconut oil instead.

Is corn healthy for you? I guess by now you figured the answer is no. What about cows? A lot of our countries corn crops get fed to cows in order to fatten them up cheaply. The only problem with that is corn fed beef becomes loaded with higher ratios of omega 6 fats than their grass fed counter parts, not to mention the steroids and hormones too. If you are a beef eater please do yourself a favor and look for grass fed beef, and organic beef if you can afford it!

Does your diet need to include any grains? Franz says very little, and if so make them sprouted grains. Is corn healthy for you? Again, no! Eliminating processed corn from your diet will help you regain vibrant health, clearer skin, eyes, and reduced body fat. Try it for two weeks. Substitute healthy carbs from fruits and vegetables and lay off the grains. See if you don't feel better while shedding a few extra pounds.
