Is Sugar As Toxic As Alcohol And Tobacco: Endocrinologist Wants the Sweet Stuff Labeled So

Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California, has made it clear that he blames sugar and sweeteners of all kinds for the current public health crisis, namely for conditions ranging from heart disease, obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. Lustig likens the consumption of sugar to the use of both tobacco and alcohol and feels that it should be regulated and labeled the same way that those two industries are.

According to Lustig, sugar, especially in higher dosages, turns into a toxic poison in the body, creating a number of serious health conditions and increased health risks.

Estimates show that overall, sugar consumption has dropped by nearly forty percent in the last three decades, however corn syrup, which often stands in for sugar in some products has increased across the nation. Fat free foods, which became popular during some fat free or low fat diet plans. Food manufacturers who tried to take the fat out of their foods to accommodate those plans were often left with bland, unsellable foods. To make up with for that lack of taste, they would instead add sugar, often in large amounts.

Critics blasted Lustig's assertions saying that there is very little real proof that sugar is directly to blame for these increased disease numbers, including obesity. They also called some of the doctor's own suggestions into question after he listed a few ideas to lower sugar amount including avoiding fructose, the natural sugar found in fruit. While reducing sugars by avoiding soft drinks and limiting fruit juices are generally considered to be reasonable suggestions by most nutritionists and weight loss experts. However, the doctor's suggestions may have implied that fruit was not a good choice.

Calling sugar a poison was a dramatic and bold move by the doctor, but may not be as scientifically backed as he would like. In addition, Lustig also did not differentiate between the various types of sugar and other sweeteners that could be used by- including all natural sources like honey which has been shown to have a number of health benefits.

Citing the British Dietetic Association, Lustig said that the average diet had way too much added sugars. The recommended amount is no more than fifty grams from sources including honey, sugar, fruit juice or jam. The average can of cola contains 65 grams of sugar or about thirteen teaspoons. Even eliminating the soda from the diet, however leaves plenty of sugar sources, some hidden in the average diet.
