Juicing Vs Blending

Many people often question which is better, juicing or blending. As with a lot of health food strategies, you can find arguments that support almost any side. Some people are all about juicing and will tell you it is by far superior over blending, and vice versa. Personally, I believe it depends on one’s intentions and needs. Let’s look at some of the arguments for and against both juicing and blending to determine which would be best for you.

Why is blending better than juicing? Well, when you blend a fruit or a vegetable, you are using the entire plant and, therefore, you keep the fiber that the plant provides. Fiber is extremely important in one’s diet as it acts as a broom sweeping through your digestive system and pushing waste along so it can be eliminated. Without it, you become constipated and bloated, and an unhealthy colon becomes a breeding ground for parasites and diseases that can show up in many other forms throughout the body. It can result in skin issues, liver problems, a weak immune system and many other issues…all from having an unhealthy colon!

In addition to maintaining the valuable fiber in fruits and vegetables, blending is much faster and easier to clean up than juicing. I know many people who prefer blending for that reason alone. I, personally, blend a smoothie almost every day, and juice only when I feel my body is asking for it. Juicers have a lot of parts to clean up, and you are left to figure out what to do with the fiber. If you don’t compost or have a way to use that excess fiber, you end up throwing it all in the garbage, which creates a lot of waste.

Blending is also very filling because it keeps the fiber. Fiber fills the belly so that a simple smoothie in the morning can become an entire meal. 2 or 3 pieces of fruit and a large handful of greens goes a long way when blending. However, if you were to juice that same amount of food, you would get a couple of swallows of juice, and you would need to use A LOT more fruits and veggies to get even a small glass. Don’t plan on getting full off of that either! You’ll probably use it as only one element of your breakfast. Because juicing requires so many more plants than smoothies, regular juicing can become very expensive! See my guidelines for smoothies to get more ideas on creative blending.

Now, you might be asking, ‘with so many pros to blending, why would one ever prefer to juice’? There are actually many juicing benefits as well. It just depends on the situation. There are times when your body may not want to keep all of that fiber, as in during cleansing.

When I cleanse, I stick to just juices for a certain period of time. Because the body doesn’t have to work at separating the fiber from the other nutrients, juicing on a cleanse gives the digestive system a rest. Your body can then use the energy that it normally uses for digestion for detoxing instead. Allowing the body a chance to rest and detox is extremely valuable in maintaining a healthy colon.

Drinking a freshly made juice requires practically no work for the body to absorb all of the nutrients in the juice. You could think of it as a predigested food. The work has been done by the juicer so that almost as soon as you drink it, it is absorbed into your blood stream and nourishing your cells. Did you know that some foods, like meat, for instance can take DAYS for the nutrients to be absorbed because of the massive amount of work that your body has to do to break it down? Juicing is an instant dose of powerful nourishment!

Sometimes, even when I’m not cleansing, my body feels like it needs a shot of nutrition, and that’s when I pull out my juicer. One glass of fresh juice can take 6-8 servings or more of fruits and vegetables to make. Imagine how potent that one little glass of juice can be!

Another benefit to juicing and removing the fiber is that you can easily combine any fruit with any vegetable without digestive issues. When you blend a smoothie, you need to take in to account which vegetables you are adding with your fruit. Very starchy vegetables like carrots, zucchini, beets, etc., don’t combine well with fruit and can leave you feeling bloated and gaseous. The best veggies to use when blending are green leaves like spinach, kale, chard, romaine, parsley, etc. This is because they contain very little starch. Fruit is so high in water content that it digests quickly, but if it mixes with starchy foods in your stomach, it sits longer than necessary in the tummy and begins to ferment. This is what causes that bloated feeling. If you are juicing, however, all of the starchy substances in the foods are removed, so you can mix carrots and oranges or beets and apples without any digestive problems.

Some people argue that juicing is always better because blending food in a high-speed blender for over 1 ½ minutes can destroy 80-90% of the nutrients because of the oxidation process. I’ve never seen any solid evidence to support this argument, but you can feel assured that you’re not killing everything good in your smoothie since it usually only takes a few seconds…maybe up to 30…to thoroughly blend everything. If you are not blending in a high-powered blender like a Vitamix or Blendtec, then worry even less. Apparently, these blenders aren’t powerful enough to do any harm anyway.

The question about blending or juicing is one that needs careful consideration. What are your motives, intentions and goals when considering either of them? As you can tell, there are pros and cons to both. It is simply a matter of your situation. Hopefully, you are able to understand that both are beneficial, and you are open to reaping the benefits of both juicing and blending in your diet.

Street Talk

We do a blended smoothie of vegetables and fruits every day. I've been doing it in my big powerful blender and well, I wouldn't start a day without it. Since we've been doing this, we don't get the flu and colds that go around. In fact, I almost forgot what these things were. I know that I'm getting better nutrition in each day and I'm not just making some "company" rich by buying their product. All I need to do to make these smoothies is either in my garden or in my local produce store! Anyway, thank you very much for this article.
