Fruits and vegetables are oozing with essential vitamins, antioxidants and antibacterial properties necessary for living a long and healthy life . But most people do not get nearly enough servings of them to optimize their health. A great way to remedy this is by juicing the fruits and vegetables instead of eating them. This is because the fiber they contain makes them quite filling, but juicers remove that fiber, making it easier to digest more of them. Therefore juicing is a great idea for anyone looking to eat a more nutrient filled diet. But what type of juicer is best?
That depends on what your needs are. The most popular type of juicer is a centrifugal one but the kind of juicer I would recommend is a masticating one. A masticating juicer, juices by chewing fruits and vegetables into a pulp and then squeezing the juice out of them, whereas a centrifugal juicer works by crushing the fruits and veggies using small blades and then extracting juice from them using a sieve. With that being said both have their pros and cons, and I will list both as I explain why I prefer a masticating juicer vs a centrifugal juicer.
First lets take a look at the advantages of the masticating juicer. In terms of the quality of the juice, it is not even close. Masticating juicers have a slow spinning motor which yields a much healthier juice because very little heat is applied during the juicing process, whereas the fast spinning motor of the centrifugal juicer causes a lot of heat to be applied. Heat oxidizes fruits and vegetables destroying some of the valuable enzymes which the original had. The slow spinning motor is also much quieter than the fast spinning one found a centrifugal juicer. Juicing on a centrifugal juicer sounds a bit like hanging out on a runway as an airplane is warming up for takeoff. A masticating juicer also has a big advantage in its superior ability to juice leafy greens and extract more juice out of the fruits and veggies. It is also more versatile. It is possible to juice nuts and wheat grass, as well as grind coffee in the juicer. A centrifugal juicer handles none of these tasks well.
Now lets take a look at the advantages of the centrifugal juicer. The biggest advantage lies in the price, as centrifugal juicers in general are much cheaper. Another big advantage is that they waste a lot less time. Larger chunks of food can be used in centrifugal juicers so it does not take nearly as much time to prepare and cut the fruits and vegetables before they can be juiced. The juice also comes out a little bit faster and it takes half the time to clean a centrifugal juicer because there are less parts involved. Cleaning a masticating juicer is probably my least favorite thing about it because there are about five different parts to clean separately. So basically a centrifugal juicer is more convenient than its masticating counterpart and this convenience is its biggest advantage.
Therefore the decision in choosing a centrifugal juicer vs a masticating juicer really boils down to a decision between quality vs convenience. If you are serious about juicing, as I am, a masticating juicer will provide more of the health benefits you are looking for. However, if you are looking more for convenience versus getting the most out of your juice, than a centrifugal juicer would work out just fine.
