Mcdonalds to End the Use Of Pink Slime In Its Meat

Jamie Oliver, the celebrity chef from Great Britain launched an all out attack on school lunch programs in his native land and then came to the US to do the same. In April of last year, Oliver turned his sites to McDonald's and other fast food establishments in an effort to make them end the practice of using what he termed "pink goo" in their meat, especially their burgers and chicken nuggets. On his show, the Jamie Oliver Food Revolution, he showed how the procedure worked and horrified thousands of viewers. Many of those people uploaded clips of the video as well as another, posting them to Facebook and to Twitter along with calls to boycott the restaurants that continued the practice.

The pink goo in question is actually lean beef trimmings, a euphemism for otherwise unusable scraps that are treated with ammonium hydroxide before being formed into the right shapes and processed from there. Ammonium hydroxide is found in items such as fertilizers, household cleansers, and other dangerous products. Once mixed, it can release potentially flammable vapors and if certain acids are added to this compound,it can form ammonium nitrate, commonly used in homemade bombs.

Ammonium hydroxide has been widely used in the food industry, typically as an anti-microbial in meats. It is also found in bread and cake products as well. Regulated by the United States Agriculture Department, the compound is listed as safe despite the unsavory thought of having it added. Most people would be unaware that this chemical compound is even included in their food because it is not typically listed as an ingredient, regarded instead as part of the processing procedure.

McDonald's Senior Supply Chain Officer, Todd Bacon said that the decision to end using the pink goo in their meat products was not directly related to the chef's show and his ardent campaign against it, instead saying that the chain had been making strides to improve raw meat standards on a global basis. Those select beef trimmings, as the food giant refers to them, have not been used by McDonalds since last year.

A number of critics have called for everything from investigations to outright boycotts of McDonalds for a number of reasons in addition to this latest one. Fast food giants, including McDonalds and Burger King are usually cited as the major reason for the ongoing obesity epidemic in the US. But, both chains are boasting strong sales even when such controversies are swirling.

Amie, Thank you for the informative article. It reminds me very much of the battle over hydrogenated vegetable oils. Evidence is ever increasing telling us how dangerous and unhealthy it is but at one time you could find it in everything. I remember seeing it in ice cream, cereal, instant coffee I couldn't believe it. It is not quite so bad as it once was but you still need to read labels. In this case where they often don't list it on the label, it is better to know the source of the product being consumed. I like home made and local farmers markets. You have a better idea what is in your food. Great article, keep it up.

What is more astounding to me is that people do not think they are free from ammonium hydroxide and other chemicals simply by avoiding McDonalds. It is in everything from cakes and bread to other foods- and no one is the wiser.

Hi Annie It continues to amaze me that anyone would actually want to eat their food however appealing the taste! I actually believe McDonalds are probably telling the truth when they say Jamie Oliver's programme had nothing to do with getting rid of the' pink slime' because their sales continue to be strong. Very depressing that people just won't learn to cook.

I remember watching a few of Jamie Oliver's programs when he was entering the schools for healthier eating and some of the choices kids would make even after they knew what was in the food. Same goes for the school administration and the protectionism of their support for bad eating habits.

I'll never forget the look on Jamie's face after showing a group of children what goes into the chicken burgers, the children were all going errr and yuk as he was making them. After he finished making them he then cooked them and asked the children who wanted some, expecting them all to say no, but instead they all put up their hands and shouted me, me ,me! When he asked them why, they said they were hungry!
