Obnoxious Organics: Does Buying Organic Foods Up Your Obnoxiousness Quotient?

A new study being published in the journal Social Psychology and Personality has linked the purchase of certain food items and an increase in self righteous and self serving behaviors. In the study, authored by Kendall Eskine, people who bought the highest number of organic products were also more likely to exhibit behaviors that could be described as obnoxious. Eskine is the Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Loyala University.

To perform the research study, Eskine and team divided their sixty participants into three different groups. The first group was shown a number of photos, each clearly labeled as "organic" foods. The second group was shown photos of more common, comfort foods including baked goods and other sweets. The third group was shown a variety of foods that were not labeled as organic and included plain rice and oatmeal as well as condiments. After each group were shown the photos, they were asked to read several short scenarios depicting moral predicaments. After reading the scenarios, each was asked to deliver a judgement based on what they read, giving a moral rating on a scale from one to seven. In the second part of the study, each participant was asked to volunteer for another study, writing down how much time they would be willing to spend in such a study.

As Eskine suspected, the organic group gave much harsher judgements on that scale than either of the other groups did. They were also less likely to help others based on their listed times on the second part of the study. On average, that group was only willing to give less than fifteen minutes of their time, seven minutes less than the group that was shown the non organic foods and nearly half as long as the comfort food group.

Eskine says that the study suggests a phenomenon called moral licensing where a person does one thing that they consider to be good which then gives them a feeling of superiority that carries over in other aspects of their lives. Part of the problem, he added, comes with the marketing of some organic foods, which often use moral terms in their labeling or in their ads, giving the implication that buying them made a person much better than buying non-organic.

A study of certain organic foods revealed that they were often no healthier or safer than non-organic foods. Organic foods are usually much more expensive and may not be worth that cost, especially for people on a very tight food budget.

eheh I enjoyed this article, and I would have completely guessed that there is a direct correlation between food choices (which have become complete life-styles - a bit odd to label food choices this way - seems a bit extreme or OBNOXIOUS) and social behavior. I am in the nutrition niche. When people become obnoxious and go overboard with pointing fingers to everyone in the human race, I get a bit upset. At any rate, I like your article. Thanks for writing and sharing this finding. :)

I used to love going to the Farmer's Market - until this type of person started going there. They are just so horrible, no one has a good time anymore.

I like to think we are out here, just hard to find each other. I think more enjoyment of life and less self stress would go a long way. Keep the articles coming!

yes, we are out there - Unfortunately, people seem to get nuts with their opinions on food choices. I personally believe eating well is important. However, I respect my fellow humans. For example, a lot of vegans really begin to hate people and try to guilt people into being what we are - omnivores. In fact, I believe some of these people would step over a dying human baby to go save a baby animal. I've been thinking of writing an article about this. I'm glad I came across this one. It is helping to buckle down and write. I have so rambled ............ ooops. sorry
