Protein Foods-How To Create Your Own List
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

For those who are not thrilled with being told what to do my diet gurus and supposed experts, there is always the option of taking the information that you know about a basic and healthy diet and then making your own diet plan. One of the easiest ways to do so is to split certain food categories up into three categories and then label those as always, sometimes and rarely. You do not use the term “ never” because then the foods on that list take on a forbidden fruit quality and are almost irresistible. while you can do this with virtually any kind of food at all, we will make a list of protein foods as an example.

The Always List of Protein Foods

The foods that you should include on the “go to” list of protein foods are all lean, healthy and nutritious. Some of them might seem a little surprising, especially to nutrition rookies who don’t know that some of their favorite foods are in fact, high in protein. Number one on this list should be lean turkey breast which is often considered to be one of the very best foods all around. High in protein but low in fat and calories, each serving will give you a number of vitamins and minerals. Other foods in this category include eggs, cold water fish varieties, nuts (including oils and butters from them) and dairy foods.

The Sometimes List of Protein Foods

Foods that you should eat less frequently include the higher fat foods. All meats are high in protein but not all meats are created equally. For instance, you might find even from the same animal, cuts of meat have different levels of fat and calories. In addition, how these foods are prepared may also have a lot to do with their nutritional content.

A perfect example of this is the turkey: lean, roasted turkey breast is considered an always on the list of protein foods and is often referred to as a super food, but the thighs of the turkey, from the very same bird are on the sometimes list because there is so much more fat and higher calorie counts.

The Rarely List of Protein Foods

Finally, there are the foods that you should rarely eat. High fat cheeses, bacon and other tasty goodies are still technically high in protein but they are also high in fat and calories. Forget the old, high protein diets of the past that suggested that you should eat bacon cheeseburgers but hold the bun as if that little bit of bread was baked in Hades itself.

If you chop up a bit of bacon and scatter in a salad or on top of a baked potato once in a while, it is not all that bad. If you are making the bacon the main attraction and starring feature of your meal, you might have problems. Stick to the foods that are healthy for you most of the time and have an occasional treat and you will be healthier and happier for it!
