Why protein is essential for muscle building and maintenance.
Protein is structured by numerous Amino Acids which the body needs for balance. When protein is consumed the body breaks it down into the Amino Acids but without adequate intake our muscles would weaken or waste away. The medical term for this is called "cashexia". A person could workout with weights to build or maintain muscle but without healthy nutrition supplements the muscles won't grow. All food sources have different Amino Acids structures. A well balanced diet would provide all of the proper Amino Acids that build complete protein. However, many people because of active and hectic lifestyles compromize their diet. This is why healthy nutrition supplements such as 100 percent protein shakes or powders are a must.
Amino Acids the building blocks of protein.
The human body creates what are called "non-essential" Amino Acids. They are called non-essential basically because we don't have to consume them. If we only relied on the non-essential Amino Acids we would waste away as desribed earlier. We need to incorporate the "essential" Amino Acids from food or protein supplements to bridge the gap and complete the protein structure.
Protein sources.
Protein is avaiable by eating animal products such as beef, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy etc. Protein is also available form plant sources such as soybean, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruit. There is one other source which I mentioned earlier and that is protein supplements. Even most people who lead very active lifestyles that have proper diets take added protein in the form of supplements. I prefer To take 100 percent whey protein supplements in between meals because it constantly feeds my muscles. Why do I take 100 percent Whey protein supplements? One hundred percent Whey protein has all of the essential and non-essential Amino Acids that muscle tissue need. for maintenance and growth. Always look at the Amino Acid profile of protein supplement prior to purchasing.
How much protein is reqired for optimum muscle maintenance.
The amount of protein veries from person to person. Body builders and weight trainers typically consume about one gram of protein per pound of body weight per day. Non-active persons should make sure to consume at least 50 percent of of what their body weight is in grams. Adding healthy protein supplements to your diet along with exercise will help keep your muscles firm, toned and strong.
