Sugar Free Or Low Fat?

Sugar Free Or Low Fat?

Which is better: sugar-free or low-fat? One the one hand, I have been telling you all about how bad sugar is and what it can do to you and I went so far as to tell you it is a toxic, poisonous, addictive drug. On the other hand, if you are trying to lose weight and already know that sugar contributes to weight-gain, then you may be also watching your fat intake and opting for low-fat or even no-fat foods. Yes?

Better check out that low-fat label. When a food manufacturer develops a low-fat or no-fat product, the flavor really suffers. After all, we love that rich texture. We know that the steak with the best marbling (fat running through it) is considered to be the best-tasting. What about buttered versus dry toast?

Let's take that as an example. Buttered toast is tasty and satisfying. But what if you don't eat butter or you are trying to avoid fat? You have dry toast and that's not really appealing so you're going to look for something else that is low-fat to put on it. Jellies and jam are a typical choice, or maybe low-fat cream cheese, or honey. Or why not make grilled cheese with low-fat cheddar? If those are some of the toppings you would consider for your toast then you have just lost the game of not eating sugar because jellies, jams and honey are sugary by nature and the jams and jellies may even have added sugar. As for the low-fat cream cheese or cheddar cheese, check them out and you will likely find the manufacturer has added one or more sugar ingredients and often a bunch of other additives, in order to make that cheese taste okay without the fat.

Most all the low-fat products out there have sugar and additives in common! Low-fat potato chips, cheese puffs, non-fat frozen yogurt, fat-free candies. The front of the bag says, "Baked," or "1/3 Less Fat," but you've got to read the fine print and I'm sorry but most of the time - even in the holy health food store - you're going to be disappointed with what you see. Most of these products still fall into the ever-growing category of junk food.

If you are losing weight and avoiding high fat, great! Don't eat deep-fried food, greasy food, meats or fish with high fat content and lots of butter, flour-based gravy, etc. But don't fall for the low-fat or non-fat food scam either because you will only be feeding yourself more and more sugar which is by far the bigger contributor to weight gain and (popular buzz word here) belly fat.

My advice is to choose high-quality, flavorful fats like olive oil or toasted sesame oil and use them sparingly but regularly. You need fat to prevent depletion of muscles and bones, you need fat to deliver certain nutrients to your body and you need fat to regulate the various systems in your body.

I also recommend that if you are serious about quitting your sugar habit, that you concurrently stop eating meat - especially red meat. Start by switching to fish and fowl. Your sugar cravings will become easier to handle. Then look into how to add more vegetable quality protein to your diet and you will eventually be satisfied with desserts and treats using fruit or whole grain syrups rather than refined sugar.

So, which is better: low-fat or sugar-free? Definitely Sugar-free! And by the way, my topping of choice for toast is mustard or no-sugar-added peanut butter and sauerkraut! But that's just me.

Another great article Patty! Anyone wanting confirmation of your wisdom need only read Eat Fat Lose Fat by Dr. Mary Enig that explains the good fats that are essential for weight loss and good health. For myself, I actively avoid sugar and 'diet' or 'low fat' products and maintain a healthy 64kg while over eating (not that I recommend that!) and enjoying butter on my toast and coconut oil in my daily coffee. Lest anyone think it's lucky genetics, I did put on 12kg in one year.... I was overseas and eating a high sugar diet. I rest my case. Thanks Patty! Another great article!

Thanks again Heather! I'm going to check out this book you mentioned. Wondering . . . coconut oil in coffee? I've never heard of that. Do you love it?

Yes, Patty. I love it! It smooths and rounds the coffee. It was also a great substitute when I gave up sugar in my coffee. I do drink my coffee black and don't know if this makes a difference. Another tip for the cafe is that if coffee is too bitter or not so nice is to add a very small pinch of salt. It's readily available and saves the need for adding extra sweetener to make the coffee palatable.
