Symptoms Of Gluten Sensitivity

This disorder manifests itself in a collection of fairly well defined symptoms, but it is of interest to note that not all symptoms are related to the intestinal tract. This why getting a definitive diagnosis can be very difficult and take a while to unravel since the presenting symptoms are actually affecting other areas of the body.

Instead of the classic stomach problems, some people may suffer from memory problems, headaches or even depression. Other people may have symptoms of bone or joint pain and possibly a variety of skin disorders such as eczema or psoriasis or simply suffer from frequent boils and carbuncles on various parts of the body.

One fascinating symptom of gluten sensitivity is its relationship to hyperactivity and its other partners mood swings and emotional outbursts. Who would suspect that this could be caused by a problem in the patient’s diet? Is it any wonder then why gluten sensitivity is sometimes so hard to diagnose?

In recent years, more research has also been initiated into the link between autism and this disorder. People with autism and even schizophrenia have shown marked improvement after switching to a completely gluten free diet. It is not fully understood why this works, and more studies are underway to explore this.

So that brings us to the more obvious warnings that something is amiss with the stomach and intestinal tract. These can include frequent indigestion often accompanied by abdominal distention – this is when the belly swells and becomes abnormally hard. More very unpleasant symptoms and perhaps more commonly known are frequent bloating with diarrhea and constipation, foul smelling gas and stools.

With all that going on it is no surprise that issues with weight gain and weight loss are also very common. Who wouldn’t be depressed having to live through all that?

In gluten sensitive people, the small intestine gets damaged over time, which leads to the malabsorption of vital nutrients. Depending on which vitamin or mineral is not being absorbed the body responds accordingly to the deficiency. For example, a B3 deficiency will result in canker sores, bad breath and memory impairment to name a few. A B12 deficiency could cause numbness and tingling to the hands and feet, gait disturbances and mouth lesions.

As you can see symptoms are numerous and widely varied. If you suspect that you may have a problem it is time to schedule an appointment with your doctor. Getting a definitive diagnosis is the key to helping you on your way to a more normal productive life.
