The Definition Of Good Health

What is good health?

The definition of good health varies widely and depending on with whom you are speaking can have completely different meanings. On one side you have a group that wants to use prescription medications along with allopathic protocols as a means of stabilizing symptoms. The other side you have several different trains of thought that all capitalize on some positive internal effect, using this as a focus to force a specific reaction in the body which is then typically touted as healthy. I know it is confusing so lets walk through a few examples to clear the mud some.

The Traditional Western Mindset

If you are feeling a little under the weather, have any aches or pains, or have any general malaise at all, you schedule a time with the local MD. A nice talk ensues, maybe have some blood work done, then typically out comes the Rx pad and the newest flavor of the month is being called into your local pharmacy. The only goal here is to get a pill to fix whats ailing you. Does not matter if it is a new condition developing or a contraindication from an Rx you are currently on, you just want a pill to make it go away. No personal responsibility has to be taken at all. The lion's share of people in the US have been brought up thinking this is normal and healthy and how things work.

The Insurance Mentality

I heard this one time and again at the clinic, and Becky just had a personal situation dealing with this very thing. You see, a person will come around looking for help wanting to cure or even prevent situations, but what they are willing to do is predicated on a co-pay and what their binders cover. They are allowing the insurers to dictate what care they can receive and for how long. Once again no responsibility has to be taken, but you still feel like you are taking action. I'll never understand this mentality.

The Holistic Approach

Upholds that all aspects of a persons needs be accounted for (psychological, physical, social, etc ... ) and everything is viewed as a part of a whole or a system. Some of the practices of alternative health include nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, psycho-spiritual counseling, acupuncture, and massage therapy. Opponents dispute the efficacy of a holistic approach in treating any known disease beyond the mere placebo. The trouble stems from the fact their are so many different points of view all believing 100% in there specific protocol that there is no cohesion. Credibility is hard to develop when from the same general camp you are hearing about the 'Low Carb, High Fat, No Fat, Low Protein, No Carb, No Water, No Air' program.

Good Health Defined

The World Health Organization defines it as:

  • A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or innfirmity.

Powerful statement, that leads one to thinking of a balanced situation where all three can be addressed as a group and not individually. The key to true health is to treat your body as a whole, giving it everything it needs, and it will do its job.

Where everyone runs into trouble is how do you define and quantify a word like 'complete'? Then where do you start and what baseline numbers can you look at? Its easy to build protocols to help a person get into balance once an internal homeostasis is achieved, but how do you get there?

What is Homeostasis

In its simplest terms, it is a balance the body reaches when everything is in its place. Proper ratios of nutrients and heavy metals, hormones, GI flora, and pH levels (and much more) all contribute to your bodies chemistry. In order to restore, prevent or cure any situation you must first attain a level of homeostasis and maintain it for a period of time. If you don't sustain this or more typically float in and out of it, you get spotty results, have good days and bad ones, or have a tendency to slowly lose ground and actually worsen the situation because you tend to stay in start mode all the time.

Creating Homeostasis

This used to be difficult because there was no real way to quantify what well, complete, overall, or general actually was. We now have tests available that will can shed light on everything. A Hair Trace Mineral Analysis (HTMA) test will give you an idea of what has been happening over the past 90 to 180 days. You see, the hair contains all the minerals present in your body, along with nutrients and heavy metals. Your results will paint a vivid picture of what is happening internally and with that information we can view how efficiently your body is working, along with your current nutritional state.

Once we have this information we can easily structure a program designed to get you into balance as quickly as possible. Everything starts with your numbers though. Balanced nutrition is the only way to create a healthy situation inside your body and in this day and age that will require sourcing foods locally from a quality grower, good quality supplements, and getting outside of yourself a bit.

Change your thinking some. There is no miracle cure and definitely not a wonder pill that will 'fix what ails ya!' Give your mind, body, and soul what it needs then get out of the dang way. You will be amazed at how good a job it will do keeping itself healthy!

Street Talk

I've been considering doing a Hair Trace Mineral Test. I'm so curious as I suffer with a lot of chronic issues that Western doctors have not been able to find answers to. My new chiropractor suggested a hair test and I think I'm going to do it once I have saved up the cash. Thanks for the post.

The key word is "balance". When your body is balanced in every way it seems improved health will follow, at least that's been my experience. For years I didn't know I was anemic mainly due to an iron deficiency. When I became aware of this, I acted accordingly and my health improved. I got a lot out of this article...thanks for sharing it!

It is amazing what the body can do when you get out of its way. The big issue is defining what the body needs to get there. Thanks for the comment:)

Yikes! Thanks for the insight. I don't want to stabilze my symptoms. I want to structure a program to get into balance. You're right, balanced nutrition creates a healthy situation. I sure vote with my feet and my eats! Gimme healthy situation inside... not stable symptoms;) Good job. THANK YOU!
