The gluten free diet is currently a very fast growing lifestyle choice for both those with celiac disease and without celiac. This diet has many positive aspects associated with it and should be looked into by everyone to see if it may be right for them. For people with celiac disease, it is essential to go gluten free because gluten has some very negative effects on their body, causing symptoms including nutritional deficiencies, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. For those without celiac, going gluten free is much more of a lifestyle choice. However, more and more people are choosing this lifestyle choice which begs the question, what are the benefits of this diet and how can it have a positive effect on our life?

Advantages of the gluten free diet

The gluten free diet has many benefits associated with it. Many people have gluten intolerance and all humans have trouble digesting wheat. As processed wheat has become more and more abundant in our diet and our society in general, some people ask if it is better to try and avoid these products. Aside from decreasing wheat consumption that humans don’t process well, the gluten free diet has many more advantages. By eating gluten free, you are likely to consume more fruits and vegetables since they are rarely made with wheat products. This increases the nutritional value that you get from your food as they are far more nutritious than most foods containing gluten. Some have argued that the diet can also lead to weight loss because you cut down on many fats and sweets as many of these products are high in gluten.

Disadvantages of the gluten free diet

There are also a fair amount of disadvantages that can be found in the gluten free diet. It takes a conscientious effort to stay on the diet as there are many delicious foods that must be avoided. Another disadvantage is that people are known to choose gluten free packaged products over more nutritional alternatives such as fruits and vegetables. A frozen box that says gluten free is very appealing to those on the diet but often contains little or no more nutritional value than the gluten containing counterparts. Finally, a gluten free diet can be a bit of a hassle when it comes to going out to eat as many restaurants are only starting to offer gluten free menus. It can also be hard to find quality gluten free products at local grocery stores

Verdict

There are many benefits to the gluten free diet and eating gluten free but it is not the be all end all of nutrition. Each person should definitely look into it and see if it is right for them, but also make sure they consider how it may adversely affect their lives.

Good article. Both my adult daughters have Celiac and must eat gluten free. This alters the way our whole family eats meals together. Manufacturers are getting better about stating "gluten free" larger on products; but they still have to be alert all the time as to what they are eating.
