The Health Benefits Of Becoming A Vegetarian

Being a vegetarian is not all about choosing not to eat animals. It's also about the huge health benefits to vegetarianism. Of course, many people hear about vegetarians and instantly think they are animal lovers, strongly opposing to killing and eating animals. But the fact is that there are many vegetarians out there that choose their diet because of the vast range of low fat, low calorie, and great tasting alternatives to meat available in supermarkets.

Vegetaianism isn't all about vegetables! Meat provides us with most of our protein, so if we ditch our main source of protein, we need something with just as many nutrients to replace it with. Remember though, although you're getting rid of the the protein, it's getting replaced - but the fat, cholesterol, and calories aren't! Most supermarkets stock special meat-free protein based food, often found in the frozen foods section, that are much healthier, and in most vegetarians' opinions, tastier too!

A lot of the meat we eat is also processed and flavoured to get the taste and appearance we like. Popular food such as chicken nuggets usually contain around 45% chicken. The rest is salt, water, and artificial flavours and colours. So that means that 55% of the ingredients in a chicken nugget are ingredients our bodies do not need. Meat subsitutes are usually made of soya, which is low in fat and high in protein. Egg whites are also usually added to meat subsitutes as a natural colour and flavour also high in protein. The great tasting, natural ingredients in meat free substitutes often do not require the use of added salt to improve the flavour, thus adding greatly to the health benefits.

Unhealthier ingredients are not only added in the manufacturing of meat, but also in the upbringing of the animals that the meat comes from. For example, chickens are often injected with antibiotics to keep them from becoming diseased in their crowded coops, and calves are fed growth hormones. Anything injected into these animals end up in their meat - it's even estimated that one in four hamburgers sold in the USA contain a high level of growth hormone...is that something you would want to feed your child?

Becoming a vegetarian doesn't mean you can't enjoy the great taste of meat, it's so easy to find in healthy substitutes. The price doesn't differ much, but the result of a healthier mind and body, a prevention of cancer in later life, and a better weight that is easier to maintain is priceless. So, if you want to enjoy life as a healthier individual and still enjoy great tasting food, the only way is the vegetarian way!
